suggestion: sept long weekend

every year for over 20 years i have been hosting a may and sept long weekend run for cruisers in the mountains west of Calgary.
it seems this will be the last year that we will be able to do so since the tree huggers have a good foothold in shutting the entire (99%) area down. the spot that we go to is rarely traveled and the scenery is very beautiful. i have always tried to have the event as family oriented so wives, kids and friendly pets are welcome.
what i am suggesting is in line with stoney's suggestion of getting the imports together somewhere. i know it is quite a drive for most of you but the trails system is quite varried from almost a freeway in the mountains to tight challenging trails. Sept is always a great weekend, dry, clear and warm.
there is a lodge very near by for those with wives (or husbands ) that don't like to sleep on the ground. the food there is adaquate, no 5 star accomodations but then the roof doesn't leak either. fuel is located at the ladge as well for easy fill ups.
there are some great views from the ridges located just 45 minutes away and the drive up is a deffinate challenge for a stocker. no one has done any damage on the easier trails. there is a multitude of trail heads just 5 minutes from camp.
if there is enough (any) interest then i can see if we can grab a couple more camp sites.
please let me know direct at
wayne@crushersrule.com

stoney, if you are still planning on a get together down there count me in. i am not trying to steal your thunder, just another suggestion is all.
cheers

Wayne, are you referring to the same place we went last May? If so, I can assure you guys if you go you'll have a blast!

Understatement.

Although I attended alone (the family wasn't really interested in flying to Edmonton to pick up a BJ70, then driving it back to Kansas, detouring to wheel with Wayne for 3 days in the Canadian Rockies, I guess) I would definately say that this is the event to take the wives to to get them into the cruiser community. Your wife will never end up being the only "gal" I don't think, b/c I think Waynes wife always attends (at minimum). The gentlemen who attended behaved like gentlemen, and the atmosphere is "G Rated" enough for the kids. It's great. Despite being the only "Yank" in the group, I felt very welcomed and a part of the "family". This isn't like a "go and everyone camps at "their" campsite and cooks "their" meal and then meets up at pull-out time for the run" kind of thing. The meals were pretty well all communal. I don't think we ever had more than one campfire - everyone hangs out together. (Or maybe that's because it rained / snowed the whole time and Wayne had the hugest "tarp city" I've ever seen). Seriously, it's really a great atmosphere. The comradary is so much fun, the wheeling almost becomes secondary.

If this is true, then go in September. If I had one complaint with the trip, it's that it was wet! Those trails would be a lot less "puckering" in dry conditions!

It's doubtful I'll be able to make the trek again this year, but I'll be jealous of those of you that do...

See ya

Reid,
long time no speak, welcome.
i am very glad you had a good time. all of us were really surprised that you had such a cheerful disposition after waking up to the wet snow. if you can ever make it up this way again (even if you need to fly up) you (and family) always have a place to stay here.
if you didn't know Billy (the husky in the photo) passed away a couple months back and it was nice to see him again in your pic.
thanks for the imput, it is great to have a neutral opinion.
cheers

Thanks for the welcome, Wayne. I've been lurking around, but not posting for a long time. I was a bit surprised to wake up to 4" of snow, but I slept warm and my truck has heat, so it didn't dampen my spirits. Made for great scenery, too. (See pic #1)

I'm saddened to hear about Billy. I really took a liking to that dog. At one point, I stooped down to take a picture of him, and when he saw me at his level, he decided to come over and say "hi". So I quick hit the button on the digital camera, but it's old, and there's a long lag between when you hit the button, and when it takes the photo. Anyway, what I ended up with turned out to be one of my favorite pictures of the trip. Rest in Peace, Billy...
