Sunday December 5th - Gorman

OK - just called the ranger and verified everything is open. Planning on running the lockwood trail north to south and ending up at the Gorman OHV area. Email me at deeeja@aol.com if you are going to make it. The following is the plan:
-9:30AM meet at the Flying J truck stop at the Frazier Park exit.
-run the lockwood trail...eat lunch 1/2 way through.
-end up at the Gorman OHV area and watch AMMO go rock crawling

Weather report is calling for rain and a chance of snow.

See you soon,
David....

David,
If I get my truck back in time, I'm in.

E, don't worry about scraping. If David's Mini can make it, so can you!

Weather is looking nasty - rain and snow. Should make for fun.

Anyone know how to get in contact with Victor? I lost his info and would be great if he could make it.

E- terrain is challenging but not crazy. Just in case I've mounted a 12k warn winch to the front of the mini. Should be no problem cuz I've got the OME heavy suspension installed but waiting for castor correction from Slee.....

Roll Call
Email me (deeeja@aol.com) and let me know if you are going to make it so we don't leave you at the flying J. My cell phone is 310-941-2110. We will be using Channel 5 on the CB.
The following is still the plan:
-9:30AM meet at the Flying J truck stop at the Frazier Park exit.
-run the lockwood trail...eat lunch 1/2 way through. Maybe a snowball fight???
-end up at the Gorman OHV area and watch AMMO go rock crawling

Weather report is calling for rain and a chance of snow.

See you soon,

WOW!!! what a trip, best run I have done so far. Trail damaged includeds fried fan clutch assembly-thanks IAN for helping me out on the freeway. By the looks of it everybody had a similiar problem(Overheating). I hobbled home 5 miles at a time, trying not to overheat and blow a head gasket. I'll post pics tommorrow. David, Matt hope you guys made it home okay. Thanks for a great time guys. See you on the next ride.

Well well it would seem that the BIG BAD A** FJ80 all overheated and broke down on the side of the 5, all the wile the tried and true fj40 made it home with out a scratch. That’s not the whole truth, I was having problems keeping my truck at operating temp, it was running too cold, so in the snow with no top or doors I got out and had to cover my radiator with cardboard to block off some of the cold air going into the radiator. When we all went into the MUD bog and got mud into everything including the radiator, I just pulled off the cardboard and drove off. I learned that you should cover the rad when going into MUD. See you all next week on the 12th, lets hope for no rain.

Thanks to all for a great time... Roger40, now that guy has some... well not sure what he has or has not, but what a trooper to wheel a 40 from SD no top, doors no HEAT... As for the 80's, i have posted a help topic to see if we can get some answers to our "over heating MUD" experence...IH8MUD, really i do. But I had a blast, too bad miller/lockwood was closed, but i think we made out just fine, minus the mud.

-Matt

Matt
After a description like that you HAVE to post some pictures! Especially for those of us staring at doing this on the 12th.

As for water "tightness" for the distributor (& starter) check in the archives for some posts by Bill (Photoman) documenting tapping and plumbing breathers for both. Not really a big deal if you do them opportunistically. Do the starter when you're replacing the contacts and do the distributor when you do a major tuneup where you replace the cap, rotor arm, etc and adjust timing anyway. Of course you're still faced with where you plumb the breathers to unless you have a snorkel.

For your radiator, did you notice any advantages or disadvantages to having the electric cooling fan?

Hope to see you this coming Sunday.
Mike
