Telkwa Pass, Northwest BC
Anyone out there from northwest BC? I trying to track down some info on a trail that follows a PNG line and High tension powerline right of way from Telkwa to Terrace over the Telkwa Pass.
Apparently the route used to be passable by stock pickups, but due to overgrowth and landslides back in '99, the trail is now only passable by ATVs. I'm not sure of the accuracy of this anymore though, i've seen some satellite imagery of the pass, and you can easily see some trails, even over the landslide path. Does anyone have any firsthand knowlege of what its like up there? Any locals want to make a go of it this summer? |

I drove it last summer. I went all the way to the lake near the top. I did not continue to Terrace. The overgrowth near the lake was pretty thick. Inch think branches. But you can take a little journey down a river to get there with out too much damage. The river crossings will not be possible till later in the summer too. hey will be too rushing for bit yet. I did it in the end of July.
One trip I want to do earlier this year is the dome mountain loop. It's a lot of fun. The telkwa pass trail is not difficult. A stock blazer(small 1/4 tone one) did it with us too. Nothing is tough. Some rough roads are about it. The dome is a bit more challenging with a long mud hill to climb at the start and that is about it for that trail. Oh and a sketch bridge that may need repair to get across it. Bring spikes and a chainsaw. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

Are you in Calgary?
PM before you come. I might be able to drag some locals to do a trip when you come. I don't know the area too well. I had my truck in my garage for the last 3 yrs while I lived here. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

yeah, i'm in calgary now. I grew up in Terrace, but have been living out here for the last 12 years now.
I've known about the route for a long time now, always wanted to check it out. We have a trip planned in August to head out to Terrace to visit family, and then out to the Queen Charlotte's to explore a bit. It would be fun to take a different route to Terrace thru the pass. It would be great to have some company up there too! So, you figure its possible to get a cruiser all the way to Terrace? Have you seen the quality of the trail where the landslide(s) crossed? I guess if we came thru in August, the rivers would be at a crossable level, eh? I saw some pictures from somone who took a Delica up to the lake, the scratches were pretty brutal! My rig's got a good collection of branch scratches, so i suppose adding some more isn't a big deal! It'll buff right out, right? Do you have an idea how long it would take to cross from telkwa to terrace? When are you planning on doing the dome loop? I have a funny work schedule and i sometimes end up with a week off with nothing to do. Maybe i could meet up with you? |

I have no idea yet. Keep in touch when you know your out this way. The landslide must be driveable, as some jeeps play on the rocks. The overgrowth up to the rocks is sever. I would almost think of spending some time cutting it back with a chainsaw while moving forward. Most of the roads were fine otherwise. I only went to the lake. So I never got a chance to see further. I take it after the lake and the obstacle it is then onto logging roads near terrace. I would think 4 hours might be a guess. It seemed like 2 hours to the lake. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |
