Just moved to Denver.. want to explore

Just rolled in yesterday.. was gonna just get the gazetteer and go but figured i might ask first. whats a good road to go up just to get up high to like a pass or a peak (as high as possible) thats within an hour or so of Lafayette? not looking for crazy crazy offroad, just something i can take my 33" BFG AT no locker fj60 up alone and be ok..

I wanna take the dog up to the mountians this afternoon.

Gunilla pass...this is a great little road trip. Take HWY 285 wast to grant. It would be better to goggle it....if you follow the pass you wind all the way over to George town. Great ....and not too crazy road trip...the road in places can can a bit bumpy, but nothing your cruiser cant handle. Have fun!

Where are you from?

Buy the Colorado Backroads & 4x4 Trail Guide(s) by Charles Wells. A must have.

Also, remember that by November anything high elevation is highly likely to be snow covered if it isn't maintained (plowed) or on a totally exposed South face. If you are going by yourself and intending to get up past Georgetown elevations, make sure you are prepared. Getting stuck up there at this time of year without proper gear can easily kill you as nighttime temps are well below freezing.

And welcome , you will love Colorado. I only give you the caution because our high elevation wheeling season is largely June - Sept. and if there is snow around one corner on the way up there is going to be more around the next corner.

Just look West - timberline is about 11K feet. The snow line you see in reference to timberline is going to tell you everything you need to know

For a primer, try the road up Mt. Evans if it is still open. That would be a much safer bet than one of the offroad passes and would get you to 14K feet if open to the top, but I'm not sure it's maintained as I've never done it.
