CMCC07 Camping

As you may or may or may not know, last Saturday some members of GCLC joined up for a recon run at Rausch Creek. After the run we took a tour of Echo Valley Campgrounds. We have reserved the pavilion/picnic area as shown on the www.echovalleycamp.com website for our campers.

The drive from Rausch to Echo Valley is an easy 10-15 minutes on back roads with an Exxon/Quiznos/mini mart on the way (as you pass exit 104 off of I-81). The campsite itself is not as refined as Red Ridge Lake.

There is an open area in the center for parking in addition to just outside our area. We will be marking off parking/driving areas to keep this organized.

The open campsite area is not as large and the ground itself is not as grassy and soft. Make sure to protect the bottom of your tent with a good tarp or ground cloth of your choice. I doubt you will be able to use plastic tent stakes. Make sure you have strong metal ones that properly fit your tent if you are camping by the stream. The other side of the area is soft mulch, so you will have to prepare your campsite before setting up your tent. I don’t know how deep the mulch is, but it was soft and spongy to walk on. The area will be in beautiful, cool shade by the time we get off the trails each day.

The bathroom/shower situation is different than Red Ridge. There are several shower/bathroom buildings/trailers in different areas of the campground. These have combinations of toilet stalls, small bathrooms with toilet and shower and stand alone shower stalls. They are not all in one place as they were at RR and they are trailer-style rather than gym-style facilities (read: smaller but more private). In addition there are a couple of porta-potties near our camping area. GCLC will provide a WOMEN’S ONLY porta-potty that will be inside the pavilion area.

There are pavilions with picnic tables scattered around. These have electricity, but don’t plan on running a compressor or welder. Radios and recharging cell phones and camera batteries will probably be about it. The main pavilion will be cleaned by GCLC staff and tablecloths will be provided for the Saturday night dinner. Additional lighting and citronella candle pots will be provided by GCLC for every table.

The pool area has a small fee. It is large, clean and newly renovated. There is a small game room with a couple of video/pinball machines.

One of the operators of the campground is a retired welder and he will be available to weld if necessary (fee TBD directly with him). Jim Chenoweth, carb/cruiser engine guru, will be there for the duration of the event to make everything OK. He’ll have his bag of tools and will be available on a first-come basis for as long as he feels like it to tweek your cruisers. (and again: $ TBD with Jim)

Impromptu Swap Meet: there’s no formal place or time for this but feel free to bring parts etc to put out for sale/trade/free.

There are cabin and trailer rentals at the campsite available for those that want a little more privacy. There are a couple of motels (Comfort Inn and EconoLodge) about 15 minutes down the road in Pine Grove.

The CMCC organizers will be doing their best to ease the transition to a new location.

Looks like I may make it up just to hang for a night around the fire. No time to wheel.
