Moab trail advice
Heading to Moab this weekend. Will have 2 days there. Anyone have suggestions on trails. I'm looking to have a great time, with some degree of difficulty, but not destroy any parts. It's a cross country trip with other destinations, and other FJs, ......so no breakage.
Any thoughts? __________________ TLCA #17667 USC MEMBER 2007 FJC |

A lot depends on your experience level. If it's your first time in Moab, I would run Fins and THings as a warm up. Here is why: It's close to town, it's exciting without being dangerous, it has a bail out half way and you can run the whole thing in a couple of hours. Maybe it's just me, but I would not want to mangle a brand new car.
After Fins, Hell's Revenge is similar terrain, but on a much larger scale. It also is not too difficult (although I think it's a 4, as opposed to Fins 3+). It has a scary(but easy) drop off just after the hot tubs. If you are alone, or inexperienced, I would avoid "Tip Over Challenge" which is near the end of Hell's. There is an easy bypass. If you want sight-seeing with some easy 4wd thrown in, an ALL day adventure would be the White Rim Trail. Take food water etc. It is spectacular. In my book, this would be a must do. It's perfect terrain for an unmodified truck. It is 100 miles long, so count on 6-8 hours to do the trail. It's worth it. Kane Creek is incorrectly labeled a 3+. There are some very difficult ledges you must climb on the shelf road and a very difficult waterfall near the end of the trail. I would stay off that if alone, or with a new car. Poison Spider might be a good choice for your last day. I don't know how the FJC would do on the first waterfall. The good news, it that that is early, so if you had problems, you could bail right there. Edit-The Charles A. Wells book on Moab is extremely helpful. __________________ Andrew 1971 FJ-40 Rubicon tested, 2F powered, some mods 1976 FJ40 Rusting slowly in the back yard 1984 FJ-60 H55f, 4.11, OME, Daily Driver 1989 FJ-62 117k-son's driver for now-low and slow 1997 FZJ-80 Driveway queen |

The Well's book is still very current. Metal Masher was another fun trail I'd recommend to someone wanting to have fun without damage. Fins and Things is my wife's favorite trail. I've done it many times and it is still fun. Poison Spider shouldn't be to bad. The Wedgie can really get your heart pumping if you don't have a good spotter. Really whatever you choose there you can't go wrong. I wouldn't recommend Kane Creek. It isn't that I think it is overly challenging but I don't think you spend enough time one the slickrock on that trail that makes Moab so special.

One other super fun run IMO is up north either Wipeout Hill or Seven Mile.. they kind of connect. Lots of baja in the sand opportunities, very scenic, very low carnage potential, just a good time.
Go to the visitor's center in town and drop $20 on two National Geographic maps- one north and one south ($10 each). They are very accurate, made from that unrippable paper that actually folds back up into its original state. Stare at each one for a little while then you'll really get to know the area. Just ask the guy at the desk what map to get (or even where to wheel). hth.. have fun! __________________ 96fzj80, mostly stock except for the suspension, steering, gears, brakes, batteries, lights, bumpers, running boards, skid plates, stereo, speakers, cargo area, and tires. some of my best friends are TLCA members. |
