yeah, i was happy that my fenders completly cover my baja trailer tires for the rock kick issue. Just for note, when i was pulling a 5x8 carson trailer thru baja a few years back, the tires stuck out 1.5 inches past the fenders, a rock got kicked up and hit the rear window on my old tacoma - shattered to pieces - i thought someone was shooting at me until i found the rock in the cab.

Depends on how much your offering!

I hope this is a "stays in the family thing" for a long time, or it becomes, "yeah, my grandpa built this back at the turn of the millenium."

Well, it seems like my sheet steel is on the move now! I have a club member helping me out with the sheet stuff and I am really excited to see the process, some of the sheet will be cut out with a laser!

I hope to be able to get a bit hands on and see the action as it unfolds, stay tuned!

the sheet work was pretty simple on mine but it was the most frustrating part of the whole build.

Drew, are you skinning the inside or the outside? I'm assuming the outside from your drawings......

Nope, I like the tube look so I am going to skin the inside of nearly all surfaces, I will skin the outside of a few surfaces depending on where they are and what is attached to them.

thanks!

Drew

Thanks! AxleIke came over tonight and helped me think through a few more design details and knock out the other fender tubing. Just waiting on the steel for the next big push.

3M VHB (Very High Bond) Tape is some thing I have checked out, and it looks amazing for lots of applications. A lot of semi trailers are being assembled with it these days.

That said, spot welds are much cheaper

I am planning on zero rust on the tube with weld-through primer between the sheet and tubes, spot welds, stitch welds were I can, seam sealer $and top coat with a quality paint.

this stuff was applied like contact cement instead of a tape,,, who knows could be the same in tape form?? but yeah thats how i found it with the semi trailer industry.

i cleco'ed my skins up to hold them for stitch welding, not bad. i tried the weld through primer, seemed to spit and crackle alot so i stopped using it.

next time i'll just have a trailer cnc'ed from a solid hunk of 6061

We use a ton of the 3m VHB tape at work. It's like $100 per roll. We use it to attach a powder coated frame to a synthetic wood product. The stuff sucks. I am currently finding a replacement product. I know the sales pitch about it being used on trailers..., but in the heat the adhesive will fail and then thermal expansion will eventually rip the two pieces apart. Your trailer looks good by the way.

Good to hear first hand experience, I have heard it is good stuff if it can be installed in a clean room environment.

another opinion

I've heard of the VHB "stuff". Go check out Nature Photography by Rob Gray and see his wothahellisthat project. He used it to adhere large sheets of 2mm thick alum. diamond plate to the steel frame of his truck. It held up quite well. Just needs good prep. Plan on losing a half a day reading the site....

My $.02,

Blue 60
