Trailer building pics

Here are some pics of my home built utility trailer. I designed and built it myself from scratch. It's got a 12' x 8' deck, #3500 axle, and a stowaway ramp. To buy a comparable unit was $2800, this came in at under $1500. Satisfaction that it turned out better than I thought it would? Priceless.

wow, looks sharp. great work. what will you be hauling with it? wheels/tires look small compared to the beefiness of the rest of the unit.

Thanks guys, gonna mainly haul quads, it will fit 4, but sleds will work too. Alot of my job is driving from rig to rig and I've built this trailer thousands of times in my head.

The tires are 14", they might look smaller than they are. It turned out a little higher than I thought it would, but extra ground clearance never hurts. When I have it completely done I'll put up more pics.

Very nice fab work. Nice job. I like the slide away ramp idea.

Very nice build, looks nice and beefy, what will you make the floor out of?

Expanded metal except over the wheels which will be plywood. Now, my thought process on this is that when I am done getting muddy on my quad, I can wash it right on the deck and let it fall through onto the washbay floor. If it doesn't work out the way I've planned then I'll go to plywood.

Any registration/assigned VIN problems? I heard rumours that the system was changing and new "homebuilt" trailers were going to be a expensive PITA to register now?

After a bit of Google research, it seems that for $50 + $3 GST, I can apply for and recieve a VIN for a home built trailer. Not sure if it has to be inspected.

So here it is about 99% finished, all thats left to do is put a piece of plywood over the wheel wells, and for now another piece of plywood up front for a butterboard until I can afford a piece of checkerplate. I had planned to put 4 quads on here but now see it is more realistically gonna be 3, no big deal, only got 2 anyway. Enjoy the pics, this was a fun project.

Wow great job! Did you paint this thing or have it coated?

A couple of things pop out at me looking at the pictures, my family has had a heavy duty truck/trailer shop for far to long for me not to notice (and mention) these missing items:

1) Rear side marker lamps missing.

2) Rear side reflex reflectors (often combined with rear side marker lamps) missing.

3)Trailer deck is wider than 80" so the rear ID lamps are also missing.

Whether or not the RCMP or Alberta Transportation would take notice or issue with the lack of these items is a crapshoot but I would want to correct the deficiencies’ prior to pulling in BC.

jasonmt, thanks for the heads up man! I appreciate the feedback, thats why I post. I am going to put reflectors and some reflective strip on it, just haven't got to it yet. I will have to put some rear lights on it, I thought about it.....just didn't do it....

Drew, I painted it myself.

So we used the trailer this weekend for the first time. It pulls perfect. Except for replacing the plywood with checkerplate and a little more attention to paint, I think its done.
