for those with tents on trailers...

This is a bit trivial, but for those with tents ontop of their trailers, do you have the tent fold out to the drivers side or the passenger side.

Why?

I might be making mountains outta mole hills on this one.THANKS!

Mine is on the DS side...because the AT Horizon has the stove box and awning on the PS side...although it could be reversed I suppose. Works fine for how we use it...

Mine opens to the passenger side, no particular logic to it.

Mine does even open to the passenger side.

Same thing on the trailer after i sold the pickup.

I was thinking that it could be more usefull like that in case of an emergency or small path if you can open it to the side thats away from traffic.
I guess it doesnt make a difference if it isnt a foldout type.
But thats just my kind of thinking.

Dont mind the Rover......its the wifeys car.

Drivers side but I cant see any reason why either side would be better than the other. In my mind I like it b/c if camping with the trailer attached to the truck it puts me closer to the drivers seat. This doesn't really make any sense though.

Mine goes to the right side (NA pass side). I have two reasons for that. One, on the 70 series the rear doors are unequal length. If I open the large door it takes up all the room to the trailer but I can get past the small door (on the left) to get stuff out of the truck. This would be awkward if the tent opened to this side. Secondly, occasionally I want to camp on the side of the road. It's nice to have the tent open up away from the road rather than toward it.

Here it is behind Ratpuke's BJ42

My main concern is I am building a scratch built unit and I want to hard mount a shower on one side or the other... and I don't want it's eventual access to be under the tent, I am going to go with a passenger side tent overhang... b/c everybody is doing it!

Thanks guys!

Miine opens to the drivers side right now. It would take me about 5 minutes to flip it around to open the other way.

I open mine on the passengers side. My thought was that if I was on a road somewhere, I could open it away from other vehicles.

Mine opens to the same side that the trailer lid opens. This is so that you can open the trailer lid while the tent is set up and access gear in the trailer.

I just got back from Big Bend on Wednesday and it really came in handy. I'll post some pics of this soon.

Dustin,

Very much interested in more detailed pics. The elevated crossbars makes sense to me. This is part of my design/build.

The shape and design of the tent (such as which side) comes down to a few factors, and I beleive the most important is where the kitchen is located.

If you pull up on the side of a road, and want to get at your fridge, boil a coffee or whatever else, then you wouldnt want to be on the road side. Some trailers have an inside kitchen, and others an outside. The logical place for a kitchen is on the passenger, or perhaps the rear of a trailer, and depending on if the kitchen is inside or outside of the tent, the tent folds out accordingly

Drew, Drew,Drew,,,The major portion of campground campsites in Moab, favor you backing the rig into, therefore a driverside access point is favored, cooking kitchems and such are of course a factor. Happy Camping. Jim

Passenger side for safety

My lid and tent open on the pasengers side. I went through the same thoughts as you. The reason I went for the passenger side. This is so I would not get run over by traffic on the highway if i need to get things out of the trailer. The tent also folds out on the passenger side so I can lift the trailer and lid to get in to my storage.

If you happen to camp in a developed campground <shudder> it seems most RV sites (ie long enough for a vehicle and trailer) are set up so the table etc. will be on the passenger side if you back in. All recreational trailers and motor homes, have the entrance on the passenger side. A lot of sites we have been to wouldn't have room to open a RTT ( or would it be TTT?) on the drivers side due to trees and bushes.

Rusty has it right. Most campsites are oriented for the passenger side. Example, campsites with pull-throughs have the open area facing the passenger side, based on the direction of traffic flow in the campsite. Otherwise, you rig would be opening away from the table, fire pit, etc. Tom
