What is this?

I oppoligize if this is in the wrong section.

What is this trailer? I helped a neighbor clean up his property and found this. He gave it to me for helping him out.

I replaced the original rusted out metal bed with aluminum diamond tread.

The hitch was a kickstand style that was totally junk. I replaced it with a removable receiver style.

I boxed the frame rails in.

I replaced the broken little round lights in the rear with some army surplus mounts and some common trailer lights.

It never had a hand brake on it and it does not have brakes behind the wheels.

You can see it has green paint under the white krylon.

Any Ideas?

Your is in a lot better shape than mine. Are they collectable or should I continue to use it to go get firewood and haul hay in it?

The frame does not look to be original, and even if it is, someone has welded a bunch of metal to it, so any collector value that it may have had is only in the box, and that would need to be really clean.

I say play with it, paint it light blue and have fun.

I purchased a M416 that is spotless a few years back to use as a Mexican blue print for making a little red wagon to drag behind my junk…just have not had the time to start fabricating the trailer yet…

I guess I cannot complain about the little trailer it since it only cost me two trips the the landfill and one trip to the recycling center.

Does a company make covers for these or does everybody just custom make thier own? I do take it with me behind the FJ when I go camping. A little dust and rain protection would be nice.

Just going by the 'lipped' fenders, it could possibly be a Spen trailer w/ some mods
Try looking up Bill Oakes over on G503. He has one and seems to be the most informed person on Spens.

I do have his contact info on my home PC. I'll look it up tonight and PM you.

From what I've seen as the biggest request item of the Spen trailers is the hub caps. If you have them and do not plan on doing a restore job on the trailer you should be able to get some good coin for them.

They are embossed with the Spen name on them. I came across a lonely Spen sitting in a yard a few years ago and picked it up. I got more requests for the hubcaps than I did for the trailer. Unfortunately the caps were not there.

Time to start restomodifying this to go with the rig that is going to pull it.

Does anybody use wood floors or do they jsut use Steel? Right now I have aluminum diamond tread in it for a floor. it is very functional but dents too easy.

Mine is enclosed but I used those 2' x 2' sq. OSB panels they sell at the the HD or Lowes to cover the metal. I glued them together with construction adhesive and threw a piece of carpet over it.....much easier on the knees.

Creates a nice "floating" floor, cool find, good luck with it.

My suggestion is to reconsider your mounting of the light brackets.

These lights are quite vulnerable to trail and other damage. I've busted my plastic housings a couple of times now. Your brackets are bolted to the thin sheet metal. That invites bending the tub or tearing the bolts out. On the military trailers the light brackets are bolted to the heavier frame.

I have been in contact with Bill Oaks concerning my Spen. These are definately cool little trailers. The original floors are just flat sheet steel, no ribs. I would weld in a sheet of steel before wood. The steel will last longer depending on where and how you use the trailer. Enjoy it!

Mine does not have the original hub caps or wheels. I installed a pair of wheels from a Jeep XJ for now. The wheels that were on it were 14 inch and someone had torched the center of the wheel to get it to fit over the hub. One of the wheels was bent. These trailers apparently could be ordered with any bolt pattern to match the vehicle that was towing it. Mine unfortunately has 5 on 4.5
