Need a tap and die set

I understand "ACE" makes them for Snap On.

When I break the taps and dies, I generally know why I did it.

I called my local Ace and they don't make complete sets only individuals. Looks like I'll buy a snap on one.

Instead of buying a complete set, you may look into buying what you need.

I think a Land Cruiser has 5 or 6 different size of bolts and threads.

After buying a crappy set due to being too cheap to buy a high dollar set, I have gone this route.

I go get one at Fastenal in the size I need when I need one. Been happy with them thus far. Much better than cheapo sets

I bought a cheapo metric set on ebay. It's a perfect example of 'you get what you pay for'. It's crap.

For a cruiser you really only need a few taps. What ever you do make sure if your buying one type it's a plug style. Otherwise you will need a taper, plug, and bottoming taps. Also remember if your getting a tap for the temp senders or anything that plug into the coolant area you want a pipe tap.

Most common taps. Get these and you should be covered on the main stuff. There are smaller ones. But most of us aren't going to need them.

Buy some thread cutting oil! Your crap will last longer and won't break. Also get the right drill size for the tap.

Tap size---Thread count
6mm----1
8mm----1.25
10mm---1.25
10mm---1.5
12mm---1.25
12mm---1.75

So that's 6 taps and 6 drill bits. Stick with good stuff and you will be happy for a long time. Good place to buy single taps. https://www.travers.com/Default.asp Page 138. Remember you want plug hand taps. And you don't really need dies as most of our cruisers are bolted together. You can always go buy a new stud or bolt.

I wouldn't suggest HD/ Lowes or Ace as they sell those cheapo Vermont American taps & dies. I bought a Craftsman set many years ago & they work okay. Often, I'll clean out old LC threads & the Craftsman taps sometimes take a little bit of metal with it. I shop at tool specialty store now that carries excellent quality taps & dies, similar to Fastenal. No comparison to the Craftsman set, tighter tolerances & they stay sharp after many uses. The edges are really sharp on those too. I always use cutting fluid for best results.

bit of a sidetrack but, gearwrench has a really sweet tap/die wrench setup kit, it doesnt really include taps but it is the cats ass for tapping. I just bought one a while ago, not cheap but worth it if you use it alot.

I ended up buying a complete set off of ebay. In like new condition. Thanks for everyone's input on it.
