Front Axle rebuild

Well, I guess its that time...was under the truck doing an oil change last night and the birf's are all wet. No clicking, but soupy.

I have never performed an axle service. Anyone interested in volunteering to help a newbie? I will buy the beer!!!

well...can't write much now, but I think this might be a good opportunity for a club event up at roger's in Manchester. I've aslo got to tear down and rebuild my front axle and third member and we've been searching...

Roger can you chime in and let us know what you think...

Nov. 10/11 would be a good weekend for me, we can get both vehicles in at the same time. Steve you need to bring a 80 manual I don't have and thing that new. We need to get Clutchee to come, he has done an 80 front end. Starting Nov. 17 we will have a 62 in the shop putting a 6.2L diesel in it, and that may take a couple of weeks.

I have an e-version of the FSM. I can bring a laptop with it on it or print the applicable section(s).

Well I can't make it the weekend of the 12th as I've got to attend my niece's wedding down in Atlanta. I can do it the 17th or the 30th, but that interferes with Roger's plan to drop the 6.2 in to the 62 for Marie. Looks like I can also do the 8th of Dec. if people are willing to do it then.

Let me know, I've got all the parts I need, pinion bearings came in the other day.

Dec. 8 also works for me, though I was thinking about scheduling a ride that weekend. But we can drink beer at the shop.

I was really hoping to do the axle rebuild before that...birfs are pretty soupy...

How much problem am I going to cause by driving it like that unti Dec?

As long as you don't run out of gear oil, it shouldn't hurt anything... it'll just make a mess.

yup...Cam is right...there is (supposed to be) 2.5Q of of gear oil in the axle housing and it takes a lot to actually run it out...assuming you haven't displaced it with water.

just unscrew the fill plug and stick in your pinky...if it comes out covered in 90w your good to go, if not fill it till it comes out the hole...if it comes out looking like a frappachino from $tarbucks then you've got water in there and just drain and refill.

they'll be fine running in gear oil.

BTW, have you ordered the rebuild kit? Are you planning on rebuilding axles or just chaning out the inner seal? If you need some suggestions on vendors or what you need just let us know!

Todd

Well, if its leaking and Im going to be that far into it to replace seals...what do you recommend? Should I just go ahead and do a full axle rebuild or would seals suffice? Kit from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters is $115 + shipping, includes bearings.

Havent had it in any water to worry about that...but I was low on gear oil when I refilled the other day...but no noise or other issues either.

The rebuild kit is cheap insurance, if the truck was mostly road driven with street tires it might not need to be rebuilt but then who knows what the PO did to it.

$115 is a little expensive. since you live so close to Steve's Offroad, I'd suggest going there for the seals , gaskets & wiper kit. Although it doesn't look very professional there, they most likely have everything in stock. i have a seal puller and the hub socket you can borrow. lets see, what else...oh, about 2 cases of papertowels, 3 cases , 1 :shotts: and some fellow cruiserheads.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't do that...no way no how...I have my reasons and pics to back it up for my feelings on Steve's Off Road and I will NEVER allow Steve to touch my truck again. PM me your # or call me if you want details.

To me 115 ain't bad especially if that's with Koyo (OEM) bearings. Plus Kurt supports both MUD and TLCA. I really can't say enough good things about him. Check with either CDAN or Toyota of Dallas for a price comparison, just make sure you're comparing apples to apples.

$115 is a good price. You might be thinking of the 40/60 kits...$87!

Todd
i wasn't saying anything about him touching the truck, just saying if you need parts quick locally, Steve DOES have quite an inventory. For gaskets, seals & stuff, i don't think that's bad.

Call kurt or Cruiser dan for the parts.....both support mud.

Also both can set you up with:
wheel bearings (inner & outer) along with knuckle or trunion bearings & all the needed seals.

May also wanta get a spare inner axle seal......just in case one gets messed up upon indstall.

From there its really straight forward.....bring LOTS of paper towels & rubber gloves

I'll bring the neoprene gloves...kinda got a source for those

I second again using Kurt or CDAN. I seriously doubt that Steve of Steve's off road will be cheaper, or even if he has the parts in stock, but feel free to prove me wrong. no worries! As I see it the benefit to the former over the latter is that you are dealing with people who sell parts (and only that) vs someone who is going to try to convince you that he has some special knowledge on why you shouldn't be attempting this on your own.

I was gonna suggest going with the new Marlin seals, but they don't have them for the 80 axles yet.

BTW, I got your PM, I'll try to call you tomorrow and give you the scoop on my previous dealings w/ Steve, but see this thread for my last dealings...
