TN Sales Tax

when you sell a vehicle to somebody in TN, is the seller or buyer required to pay the sales tax?

The buyer pays it when they get it registered.

thanks, that's what i thought but this spring when i went to register my boat the lady asked, "have you paid the sales tax already?" of course i didi told her. i made up a story that i once had TN registration but then had to move into GA, then back to TN and i didn't have to pull out my plastic. how does the state know if you've paid it or not when changing the previous title to the new owner? is it part of the title transfer process?

I know that when my brother bought his F250 in Oregon, and I attempted to register it for him he had to pay the sales tax...that being said, I just got a refund check this week from the clerks office. So, who the f*ck knows? I do know that I won't be calling to inquire...they might want it back!

If you buy it from a dealer he is required to collect the tax, but if you buy it from a private party you pay the tax when you apply for TN title (required to register it) on the amount on the bill of sale. If you are registering a vehicle in TN that you owned in another state you should not have to pay TN tax.
