OK - back from Mobile and got the dash all buttoned up today. Used about 500 wire ties. Then I tried to start it and got no headlights and no spark. WTF. Messed with the alternator and coil wires, tried again and both worked. Freaking gremlins!
Anywho, I got the backup light working and discovered the either there is very little gas in the thing or the gas guage or sender does not work. That is for another time. Tommorow I plan to finish the wiring under the truck, get the emergency brake adjusted and get at least the driver's seat in so I can take the bastard around the neighborhood. Then the next thing will be trying to lean out the weber a bit before I decide to go with Bob's suggestion of an electric fuel pump to reduce the fuel flow to the bastard. I have a few Aisin carbs. I should send one to JimC for a rebuild. I will think of you guys having fun on the New Years run.

Later production Cruisers had a return line for excess fuel to feed back to the fuel tank. Would a plumbing revision be viable to provide bypass of excess fuel with the reliability of a mechanical fuel pump and no additional electrical gremlins possible? __________________ Larry Downey Kennesaw, GA 1986 BJ70, 1981 FJ40, 1995 FZJ80 1981 FJ40, 1986 BJ70 (Projects) |

Stop chasing that POS Weber and go Aisin. The cost and hassle of an electric fuel pump would be better spent sourcing the correct factory fuel lines and throttle linkage for the Aisin. Jim C might have them. He sold me some of the lines for my '73, which does have a fuel return line btw. I got the other parts from SOR and from cruiserparts.net (who I can not recommend - the "rust free" linkage parts they sold me were solid masses of rust and useless. They laughed at me on the phone when I complained. I give them
![]() ![]() for asshatness.)

Agreed there, Sean. I have had a couple experiences with them as well. I do not think I would use them again unless I absolutely could not find something I needed right away and then I would expect to have to blast it, repair it, modify it and paint it no matter what. __________________ Hugh Heifer 9/71 FJ40 / 4 Speed / '77 2F / Weber / Header / 4" Skyjacker / 35" BFG Mudders [ And a '71 going ground up] |

With the thought in mind that some of you bastards were on the New Years Run, I was intent on one myself. I got all the electrical buttoned up and threw in the driver's seat and started the Mule up and manhandled her out of the shop. The clutch needs adjusting again (I think the cylinder might be going bad) but I was able to take it up and down the street a few times in the cold! It did some sputtering and died a couple times partly due to my clutch and a need for some carb and timing adjustment but once it was back in the garage it had blown all the old carbon out of the exhaust and there was no more condensation dripping once it got heated up. The speedo worked but the 4wd indicator light which was stuck on is now off and would not relight
, I also have a mechanical problem in the collar with the left turn signal. I just need to put a roll pin in the lever or something to fix that.I reluctantly brought her back in the hangar and looked underneath and in the engine compartment and to my amazement, NO LEAKS!!! ![]() It was a good way to start the year. __________________ Hugh Heifer 9/71 FJ40 / 4 Speed / '77 2F / Weber / Header / 4" Skyjacker / 35" BFG Mudders [ And a '71 going ground up] |

Congrats!!! Your road trip today will probably be a great memory and personal accomplishment that will be fresh in your memory for a long time. Did your bride get a chance to video you & the 40, or even get chance to take a spin down the street?

refused a ride again today but did help with the clutch. I re-bled it and got some bubbles out and then adjusted the freeplay as well as the lower "custom" piston rod. I am certain there has to be a leak but I am not loosing any fluid. I am perplexed.I also adjusted the emergency brake and then went for another quick ride. Itis freaking cold out today!!! I got insurance on the beast so I plan to get to DMV and try to get it registered so I can take it to the gas station all legal like! I worked on the split case after that. __________________ Hugh Heifer 9/71 FJ40 / 4 Speed / '77 2F / Weber / Header / 4" Skyjacker / 35" BFG Mudders [ And a '71 going ground up] |

Well - shit. I have an oil leak. It is my own damn fault. When I put the motor in I noted the amount of permatex on the timing chain cover and I know that folks not overtly practiced with the F or 2F motor frequently do not torque these in sequency causing leaks. I shrugged it off. I used the excuse that I did not know the condition of the motor anyway and did not want to spend the extra $ on the seals - all $5 or whatever. It originally intimidated me to open the cover too (this from the guy who pulled the motor and all anyway.) Well, I drove a bi today and discovered a significant amount of oil running out of the the cover down the front of the oil pan and down the front axle and on to the ground. Shit.
The good news is the transfer case is working as it should, I just need to make a plate to limit it to the H, and 4 settings. There is not plate surrounding the stick. I figure it was left off due to a clearance issue. I plan to make one out of 3/16th and mount it to the hump inside the truck. I also am suffering a considerable amount of coolant loss out of the overflow tube. I do not have a burp tank. What should I do about this? Finally, I leaned out the Weber. The mixture screw on the passenger side was open about 4 turns!!!!! Now both are open abiout 3/4 turns and it helped the gas stench I left a trail of as I traversed the neighborhood. So I guess I will put a callin to Bob or CDan this week. I need a couple more things for the split case (I buggered a seal) and some other odds and ends. __________________ Hugh Heifer 9/71 FJ40 / 4 Speed / '77 2F / Weber / Header / 4" Skyjacker / 35" BFG Mudders [ And a '71 going ground up] |
