My Roundup Photo Page is UP!

I took a lot of photos at Roundup. What a great event it was.

just go to http://mannphoto.com/roundup to see the photos.

Most of the Land Crusiers I photographed, I got the owners email address. But there were a few that I neglected to do so. That is why I am also posting on this forum. I hope Frydaddy sees this, because he is one of the guys whose email address I didn't get. There is also a tan fj40 with a tow bar, a green fj40 with no fenders, a bronze stock FJ80, and a marron FJ80

Are you the guy I talked to about Toyota Trails and ownership of photography at Roundup #1? We had dinner at the same table at the Hard 8 on Friday night?

No, just thought you might be the same guy. Told me that the "all photography submitted to Trails becomes property of the TLCA" or whatever blurb in the magazine had always kept him from submitting his photography. TLCA discussed it, we removed the blurb, but funny thing, he still never sent anything in. Thought I might need to give you a hard time.

well, I am glad you removed it. And this is why.... if the magazine owns the photo, then they could sell it as stock to another publication, or vendor, or calendar, or whatever. the mag could make money off of it. And would theoretically be competing with the photographer trying to sell similars to the same potential clients. Professional photographers like myself are only too happy to allow a magazine like Toyota Trails to use the photos for free. I wouldn't even place any limits on how you used it and how long you used it (i.e., I would not have you sign any contract limiting your rights and usage). But handing over ownership is ANOTHER thing..... something that no professional photographer should do. And, it is totally unecessary.

sometimes magazines like Toyota Trails simply do that because people used to send in slides and prints and wanted them sent back. If a magazine gets 100 submissions, they don't want to be responsible for sending them back. That is a moot point today, because everything is digital.

I am glad they removed the blurb. Do you have anything to do with the magazine?

Begs the question, why have you never submitted to Toyota Trails? I would definitely have used many of your Round Up photos.

I run it.

Roundup was my first event. I have owned my FJ60 for 20 years, and have been a member of TLCA for 3 or 4. But Roundup was my first event.

a couple of days ago I emailed the editor the link, to show him the photos, but didn't hear back from him (editor@tlca.org). I might still hear back from him. I am sure he is a busy man and his job might even be a voluntary one.

I realize that submitting used to mean mailling in photos. but these days, to me atleast, submitting means emailing a link. then burning the appropriate files and mailing that CD in. I have never seen anything in the mag about the appropriate protocal for submitting photos.

Submission information is on page 4 but is admittedly outdated.

Editor@tlca.org for whatever reason doesn't deliver much mail to me. I heard from Mark Hawley after the event, sent me an email that I never received. I'll look into it. In any case this is why I list my work email address as my contact in Trails: todd@larkbooks.com

I'm glad you were at the Round Up and I hope the fun you had there will lead you to other TLCA events. Contact me directly anytime and I'll be happy to work your content into the magazine. But anything posted on a public web site is ruled out for inclusion in the magazine. Most folks let me pick and choose what I intend to consider for usage and then they post the rest here and elsewhere.

For what it's worth, we work in several manners in this regard. I have a very fast email connection so most of the time members can just email their high res photos to me. Other times I'll pull them from non-public member websites. Or we can work via ftp. We're really more full service tech-wise than we may appear. And of course I do still accept and then scan submissions sent as prints or slides via the mail.

oh, ok. sorry, I don't know who is who around here. I just found out about this website while at Roundup. Look, I am a little perplexed. I have been a commercial photographer for 30 years. I have shot for tons of magazines, annual reports, ads, billboards, CDROMs, etc. I have never "submitted" anything in my life to anyone. My experience has been that magazines (and agencies, design firms, corporations), call me up and hire me for an assignment. I am becoming more and more enthusiastic about the Land Cruiser community, and have noticed a big improvement in the quality of the magazine. Roundup was a great experience for me.... and I didn't even personally do any wheeling at round up (don't want to hurt my stock daily driver).

I emailed the email address for the editor of Toyota Trails magazine to go to a web page and see the photos I took. I thought it would have been cool to hear back from him (you) if he were interested in using any in the magazine. I also emailed the president. He emailed back his compliment. I don't know the first thing about submitting to a magazine. I have the feeling that I didn't go about it the right way. I am sure submitting to magazines is something that amateur photographers are far more experienced at than me. I thought that inviting you to look at the photos would spark some interest. but I guess not. That's cool. I did it just to pay back the guys who let me ride with them. Henry Brimmer wanted 3 photos, so I pulled them immediately. I never even got around to contacting him. He contacted me and asked me. I hope he uses one. we'll see.

Chris,

Had I known you and that you were a photographer and that you were interested in the Land Cruiser community and that you would be at the Round Up I most certainly would have contacted you in advance. None of the above applies -- we've still never met. Now that we have been in contact though and you have an email address that works (todd@larkbooks.com) hopefully we can work together in the future. I would still prefer to see photos before they go public but that can be worked out.

One major difference between Toyota Trails and publishers that produce "tons of magazines, annual reports, ads, billboards...") is that we have no full time staff. We don't even have an office. We are a group of mostly volunteer folks spread all over the country doing our best to piece together a high quality magazine on a shoe string budget in our spare time. So while myself and others keep our ears and eyes open for potential stories, most of it happens the other way around. As in, someone emails or calls me and says, I did this cool trip in my Land Cruiser, would you like to cover it in Trails?

As to thinking "that inviting you to look at the photos would spark some interest but I guess not," you're missing the essential point that I never received the email (no fault of yours). Clearly something is broken in our (also voluntarily supported) email system, and I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. I've asked that it be fixed so this doesn't happen in the future but let me make it clear that there was no lack of interest on my part. Just lack of receipt of the email.

Let's hook up on something in the future, and thanks for your interest in the TLCA and Toyota Trails.

TJK

oh, ok. I found a list of names and email addresses on page 2, and looked no further. Now I see all the info on page 4. I emailed you at editor@tlca.org waited a couple of days and put up the page.

I feel bad that I screwed up the chance of getting the guys who let me tag along.. into the magazine.... because I notified you at a bad email address... and because I thought page 2 was the contact page... and didn't see page 4. what a dam shame. oh well. live and learn.

I didn't contact you before Roundup, because I didn't want to be so presumptuous. Sorry I didn't realize who you are earlier. You should keep using that new signature file that says who you are, lol

anyway, thanks for the education in submitting to magazines.

My preference to fly under the radar doesn't always serve me well.

No apologies needed on your behalf. The contact information on page 2 should be the same as on page 4 (and will be soon). I don't really read those pages very often.

You can still send me stuff. I might print it if it came off your web page soon. I have a ton of great photography though. Still, couldn't hurt to look (which I'll go do now).

What's the problem with using photos that are already public in the trails?
