New for McGrew this year...

Friday informal run in.

Many folks have asked to come in earlier and hang at Sourdough campground... this year PMC member Jeff Dirks will escort in an informal group on Friday (for those interested). His plan for Saturday while the main trail ride is happening, is to explore the mine sites in the area.

Good stuff!

oh ya, July 26th I believe... should be the last Saturday in July. Friday group will be the prior Friday of course, meet in O'Brien around 9 AM and take the forest service road in.

Just checked TLCA Calendar and confirmed...

Tony- I can help with the Friday run if needed. I have also explored the mine sites down there and some of the other hiking trails. We talked last year about a Friday run for people to be able to spend a full day at camp, glad to see it's happening. Should speed things up on Saturday having the group thinned out a bit. Will we need the Feds inspecting Friday as well then?

Garett

thanks Garrett... Yes, Jeff (B) and I would like you to team up with Jeff (D) and take the lead on Friday.

Not sure about using market field. Will need to find other rendezvous locations.

I can work on the logistics of Thursday night lodging. Have Jeff D shoot me a PM so we can get in touch and work together on this.

Good question Clint, I completely missed that. I will let Tony elaborate.

Hey ... always nice to see the early interest.

I'm chiming in with a couple quick ideas:
The trail is technically a forest service route open to the general public at all times. We pull a permit & go through an inspection process mostly to send the FS a message that this trail needs to stay open for responsible enthusiasts (& it does help) What I mean by this is that Friday could have several options, depending on folks interests & you don't necessarily need a permit or inspections.

What Tony means by "informal run" is that you would not be part of the official TLCA sanctioned, permited, run on Saturday unless we change the official format (I'm not apposed ... just still processing how to pull that off)

Some could explore mines, some could hang & swim, some could wheel the trail backwards after setting up camp, some could wheel the trail to camp in the regular manner, some could wheel the the last half of trail back & forth, some could ....

I'm open & waiting to see where these ideas lead us

I would be willing to lead a run in on the McGrew trail Friday. If people just want to take the easy way in I could do that too and run out to the store Sat. morning for the formal run. Basically I'm on board for whatever we need to do on Friday.

Tony, did Bud ever get that video copied? I sure would like to get my hands on that since he was walking in front of my rig the whole way up the sluice

I like this idea, of going in on friday. I planned on taking the easy forest service road in on saturday because the whole family is going again and I will have 7 month old son and think the trail will be to ruff for him. So with that being said I'm in for the friday run if anybody wants to take the easy way in. Josh

Garett, If we go in the easy way on friday and I get the wife a kids settled in, and you decide to go out saturday morning, I could throw you a few bucks in gas so I could tag along with you, if you have room. Josh

I will keep you posted on the plans as it draws nearer. You should be able to get a seat on the "wagon trail" one way or another.

I was always under the impression that this was an easier trail. How would it be for a built 100? Not the just in and out trail but the whole enchilada?

Shouldn't be a problem for any Toy with a mild lift. Harder for full size rigs and those not lifted with running boards will understand what sliders are for.

It should be no problem for you, there are only a few tough places without bypasses. A bone stock Toyota 4x4 of any type can do the trail, but there is a possibility of damage (mostly rocker panels) in those tough spots. I know we had a (stockish) 100 out there 3 years ago, I don't think he had any trouble. But the trail has gotten a little harder over the years since then.

Good point gnob, EXPECT pin striping! No worries though, it should buff right out

Nathan Campbell, really nice guy, local Yota mechanic/fabricator & owner of Ken's Auto, (has attended in the highly modified lime green FJ40) just contacted me hopeing to volunteer. If he makes it, he's willing to be trail sweep again on Saturday with his tools, welder, compressor, etc. to "make sure" everybody makes it to the potluck. He's also already garnered some pretty nice raffle fodder too

PS - My bad for procrastinating, but Todd K's really working hard at trying to fit in last years run write-up into the next Trails. Keep your fingers crossed.
