The run is not full yet. From the San Fransisco Bay area, doin the speed limit, it takes about 61/2 -7 hours to trailhead. The route is 17 miles long with the actual hubs engaged wheeling trail about 11 of that. We average about 6 - 7 hours of wheeling, with most folks getting into camp around 5 pm ... usually lots of time for a good swim in the North Fork of the Smith River (cleanest damn river in North America! ) and some sunny rocks to dry out on. Then potluck dinner & raffle. Remember, up here at the CA/OR border, it doesn't get dark, dark till 9:30 or so.

Of course, this is all very general and doesn't take into account any

If anyone is coming in early (Thursday) and wants info on places to stay let me know; motels in Grants Pass or Cave Junction, camping at local areas. If people will be around Grants Pass on Thursday we can head to the local brewery/pizza place for dinner. Any last minute wrenching can be done at my house if need be.

Anyone going in later in the day on Friday? We will be coming down from Roseburg and I've got conflicting info on the "easy in" route. And for those in the know, is the "easy in" easy enough to pull a pop-up in?

Definate maybe, if you take it easy. Last year I had a buddy that brought in a stock mazda pickup....ground clearance issues though. Also there is a bit of a wash out dropping into SourDough, a full size can still make it but it's gettin' a bit more narrow. As for the "easy way" when you turn at the O'Brien store stay on the main road for approximately 12.7 miles or 10.7 on the button after it turns to gravel. Then stay left and follow that until you get to the saddle (you'll know the one) at that point there are three choices to stay in the same direction you are going stay right and it will drop you into SD (this saddle is approximately 22-23 miles from the gravel) if you stay straight you end up back on 99 in California, the left goes ? and if you take the hard right switch back you end up on the McGrew.

PM me if my directions are clear as mud and I'll try to clarify a bit or get yer info and call ya with more clarity.

Uhhhhhhmmmmm yeaaaaaahhhhh? You could pull a pop up in, but I wouldn't take the one you like... The easy way is still a bit rough. Not impossible though.

Wow. Last year was my first time on the McGrew. I had a great time but was looking forward to doing a little more instead of cruising through to sourdough. Too bad, I just have too much going on in my life right now to join y'all.

Keep in mind there are spots where vehicles traveling in oppostite directions on a single narrow road, whether the trail or roads have to pull over and let one pass or back up to a good spot... not fun with a trailer, not impossible, however. Definitely don't bring anything without ample ground clearance..

Hopefully you guys connected by phone for clarity. There is one left, mid way, off the route you describe, that will lead to a dead end at Diamond Creek. It used to have a gate (I don't pay attention to it anymore, so can't say it's not still there) just after the intersection that would be a clue that it's not a main route. Stay right there instead.

I agree, a high clearance pop-up is doable as long as you take your time & watch for big waterbars.

I will be home Friday & if you are going to O'Brien from the coast I'm right off the HWY 199 just 25 minutes before the trailhead & can pass you off a map. If you're interested, PM me for directions.

See ya soon.

Registration is finally in the mail. I know, I know, say want you want.

Thanks again Jeff!, Can't wait to wheel and see everyone. We'll be bringing 'Ham in a bag', of course.

Carlos

OK - The registration deadline has passed by 2 days, but I know of at least a couple that will still dribble in & maybe more. I also think there are several we will see in camp on Saturday that have not signed up, but we'll figure that out then. The number of "signed up" rigs is approximately half of last years, which will mean a "like the old days" kind of run. That's not necessarily a bad thing Like Todd K. kinda wrote in the latest TT, light attendance on many sanctioned runs is likely tied to fuel costs. That was also a comment I heard from the PNWFWDA's run.

I'm sending run info sheets & map, to those I have registered at this point, today. I will not be able to see who any late arrivals are, or respond to any contact, or look at this string until the 16th at the earliest (after tonight). I also have a family emergency that will be taking me to Florida until 2 days before the run!

So, I'll see many of you very soon

As Jeff vaguely noted, he is going to be out of town on family business virtually right up to the event.

In the mean time, I'll be filling in for him... so if reading this, go ahead and send your registration and info directly to me. This way we can better provide shirts and such.

PO box 1893
Healdsburg, CA 95448

or email me tonytwiddy@yahoo.com. You can also paypal your registration to that ID.

We will not know fire status (confirmed for event) till the Thursday, July 24th, before the event. Plan accordingly. Long time event attendee Aric and crew will be on firewood detail if a Go.

Jeff Dirks will be taking the forest service road Friday.
Garret will be taking the trail Friday.
both informal groups leave the O'Brien store at 9 AM.

At least, this is what I understand.

As I always say... family and career first, then 4 wheeling.

I just ran the trail yesterday, and it's in good shape, a couple spots have gotten a little worse, but it should be no problem. Lots of :cough: pin stripping to be expected.... Although the dust will make it look worse than it is....
