I'm having to leave next Wed, Thur at the latest and wondering what happens if I don't get it before I leave. I assume that it isn't necessary to have it in hand at registration or am I wrong in that assumption...

It's also a tradition in 4wheeling that the driver is always in charge and at fault. The spotter is trying to help to the best of their ability, but YOU are responsible for your truck. If you don't like the spotter's line, get out and survey it yourself.
Look at the guys with the most experience like Mudrak, Pismo Jim or Tony. Their trucks are heavily damaged, crunched, mangled, modified etc. it's not because they are bad drivers.
As the leader of the Wagon run, I let everyone know up front, that if they are not willing to have significant damage to their truck, they should not be on the trail. We try to avoid it, and mostly do, but this is not a trail for the feint of heart in a new truck.
The FJC has some special concerns about the strength of the front end, the rear diff and the like. I've seen them do well at Rubithon, but don't expect to come out clean, since you probably won't. Like all other wagons, there is lots of sheet metal in harm's way, and half a second of inattention can take out a whole quarter panel.
I learned early on from Pismo Jim, that you can expect 1 dent in the body each time you run the Rubicon trail. That held true for me until last year when I had my first and only run without any new damage at all. It's all statistics, and I'm due this year.
|
Anyone that has wheeled with me can attest that I'm not afraid to use it for what it was meant for. Most think that I'm stupid for having smashed up our brand new rig the first weekend that we owned it, and my wife agreas that repairing any of the damage so far would only attest to the stereotype that JFC are for "soccer moms". The only concerns that I really had were regarding vehicle retiring damage ie severe strucual. And as for spotters I didn't even mean to imply that anyone on the trail would share any responcibility for my driving or rig other than me. Thank you for warnings and real trail experience advice. I will continue to expect body damage and the possibility of not making it out under my own power. However I will hope that staying light on the right foot and heavy on the slow is smooth approach will get me out under my own power.

Most excellent... sage advice for all our drivers!
and as to vehicle count...now why would you bring that up. Lets just say 'phenomenal turnout'.

Unless the "got body damage" stickers are basketball shaped I don't think that will do it.
And the first was the easiest...Toy350 will learn soon enough

I find that putting it in the deepest part of the depression protects the sticker the best
It doesn't have to cover it. It's sort of like the label on a trophy... reminds you what it's from

MTB... no, you do not need it. Your trail leader has your name, that is all that matters at trailhead.
Greg... welcome to the forum. Folks, Greg literally meant his 20th Rubithon... wow.
Kevin and Jerod... I can get to 21...
Landcrusher... after a certain point, it is what it is, huh. We are as ready as we're going to be.
for me... plaques are ordered, comm awards on site, raffle stuff delivered but still showing up, counts are in. This weekend is truck prep and packing, next friday I pick up a zillion shirts and begin packing individual packets all weekend. Couple of small errands today to ensure everything is ready. Sunday night teleconference with Trail committee, Geoff is mailing out trail packets today.
James and Michael... if you read this, expect a phone call tonight.
Mark... I need the lyrics in a word format.
Oh boy!

No, in fact it's preferred for you to bring it in. The Mog Crew is going to be loaded down this year.

Yes-The water is pretty good, but I would not drink it without boiling it.

Bring your favorite 5 tunes on Ipod
For those reading this, set up your favorite 5 tunes via a playlist on your Ipod and bring it into the springs Saturday afternoon during horse shoes. You can plug right into the PA system and beam your favorite 5 songs for all to listen.
nothing explicit, no rap, no disco.

Put some new springs (Dakars w/extra heavy leaf) in the front and new tires 37x14.5 Toyo Open Country M/Ts. Too bad I didn't have time to trim the fenders.
Going to put the "Rub" in RUBithon...
Maybe someone will bring a sawzall or cut off wheel...
A few poser shots
