Quick question: do cell phones usually get reception on the Rubicon Trail? I have Verizon, if that makes a difference. My wife sleeps better if she gets a daily call in the evening with a report that I am still in one piece.

Matt,
There's only one place on the trail that there's cell phone signal. That's halfway the first day. The rest of the trail has no signal.
If you must make the calls, rent a Satellite phone. They run for about $99 a month with 30 mins free.
Regards
Alvaro

Verizon gets the best reception. Only at Walker Hill. Beyond that, there is none.
Ditto the Sat Phone. A few people will have them there.

Actually, she could Echolink to one of the repeaters in the area.
That way she could talk to you from your PC at home, while you are on the trail.

Matt-
My wife does the same. I'll have a satellite phone with me. Find me at Rubicon Springs usually near the Registration area. Call her from your cell phone at the top of Walker Hill.

We debated but since we're doing the one day we decided to go as a family. As for fuel I think that I'm going to end up using my spare fuel to get home, cheaper than buyin' fuel at the pump but that being said the'd still need to be refilled..... can't win.....

This may be a stupid question but what firearms restrictions does California have that may be important for us to know? ie AR15's Pistols...

Unless your AR is registered in CA and you are the registered owner, it is a serious felony to possess in CA. Handguns are restricted to 10 round mags and your OR concealed carry permit holds no water in CA, assuming you have one. They must be kept unloaded, locked separately from ammo, with no access by occupants.
Just remember you are entering the socialist republic of California, my and my children's home state that I regretfully admit I would have a very hard time returning to due to some of these highly restrictive laws...

Before my moving back home AR's were still legal as long as they didn't have more than ... 3 of the restricted: Flash hider, pistol grip, magazine fed, colapsable stock... but I remember they were trying to pass a law adding "black" to the list. and you could cary a pistol open if you had a fishing license ... better safe than sorry. Leave it to Cali. I guess trusty 12 will have to do for the week. Thank you.
