Attention New Mexico recreationists!
Mark Werkmeister over at the New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Alliance (NMOHVA http://www.nmohva.org/) sent us the latest on some really important meetings being held by the Santa Fe National Forest. Mark serves as secretary for NMOHVA and is very active in the Four Wheel Drive association as well.
Mark and the gang at NMOHVA are asking everyone to attend these important meetings. The input the Forest Service receives at these meetings will be used to formulate a "Proposed Action," which will be then be used to formulate a final travel plan.
Keep in mind that all routes not designated open in the final Travel Plan will be closed!

ATTENTION NEW MEXICO OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE ENTHUSIASTS:
The Santa Fe National Forest is formulating a new travel plan that will limit ALL vehicle use to designated roads, trails and areas. The Forest Service (FS) will be hosting a series of Travel Management Workshops over the next six months designed to provide opportunities for hands-on public involvement in the development of the agency's new Travel Management process.
As you know, the FS published a new rule requiring the agency to formally designate a system of roads, trails and areas where motorized vehicle use would be allowed. Forest Service regulation and other laws require the agency to conduct a planning process in collaboration with the public to help design the designated system.
Phase 1 workshops are scheduled for November and December in nine communities served by the Santa Fe National Forest. Subsequent rounds of workshops (Phase 2-3) will be scheduled from January through April 2007. This is part of the local planning process which will finalize with the production of a motor vehicle use map by the January 2010.
Participants will have opportunities to interact with Forest Service staff and will be encouraged to submit written comments and identify places of interest or concern on maps. All members of the public are encouraged to attend, especially individuals with interests in or concerns about motorized recreation on National Forest System Lands.
Input from these workshops will be used in the development of a Proposed Action by Forest Service staff. The Proposed Action describes the agency's goal (i.e. the designation of a system of roads, trails and areas for motor vehicle use). Alternatives for meeting that goal will be formed then analyzed, and finally a decision will be made on the agency's preferred alternative.

For information about how you can borrow GPS equipment to map trails and routes; how you should submit data; or to learn about or become involved in the efforts of local interest groups that are involved in this effort, please contact Robert Potts at (505) 438-7829. You do not need GPS technology to mark your routes or trails. You can mark the route or trail on a forest map using a marker. However, if you have access to a GPS unit, the information would be more precise.
