HELP!! Closing Chile Challenge?

Maybe. Some people want to make the site no vehicular access (in reality) by creating a national monument. So, the Las Cruces NM newspaper is taking a poll:

"Do you think the prehistoric trackways area in the Robledo Mountains should be made a national monument?"

The answer is NO! We want to leave it open!

Vote - it only takes a minute. Spread the word, and quickly please!

Steve,
Thanks for posting this. To keep this 80's Tech, I will add that the Chile Challenge is an excellent off-roading event and 80s do well on the trails in that area.

Vote NO, vote often, and it appears to let you vote from your home PC and your work PC (Not that I would advocate doing that )

Those that want to close down trails will use every trick they can come up with and this one is pretty low.

decavo,

It is not a trail. It is over 5,000 acres of BLM land that has dozens, maybe hundreds of trails. It's right in your back yard so read the materials in the link posted and get involved or lose the best trails in your part of the country.

There is also nothing to "see" at this proposed National Monument. It is a pretty dismal place but there is some excellent 4-wheeling trails from mild to wild.

more info

the bill in question
http://www.theorator.com/bills109/s3599.html

The Following is what I posted on the NMTTORA forum earlier.....

'I found an interesting part in section F;

(2) PERMITTED EVENTS- The Secretary may issue permits for special recreation events involving motorized vehicles within the boundaries of the Monument, including the `Chile Challenge'--

(A) to the extent the events do not harm paleontological resources; and

(B) subject to any terms and conditions that the Secretary determines to be necessary.

Yea right......Clever way to shut up the critics without making any guarantees.'

Both of our U.S. Senators are the sponsors of this and the Head and Ranking memebers of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee to which this bill goes to for approval to the Senate Floor......
I am not liking this one bit. There are a lot of places that are not even close to the 'tracks' (and I use that lightly) that will be forever closed if this goes through.
