1st Annual Rubithon article

Here is a nice article on the 1st Rubithon from the November 1989 4WD Action magazine. Some people mentioned and pictured (65swb45, Marlin...) are still active in the cruiser community.

"Stopped in Placerville, our last chance for $2 a gallon gas."
Wow...six months ago, that would have been "the story's the same." Not this week...

Nice bias plies on Rough Toys Big tire were 33's back in the day, huh!

Page three: who said white guys can't jump!

Cool stuff, thanks!

HaHa! Yup, that's me on Page 1 with Marlin riding bitch. That's also me in the color shot, lower left on Page 4 after I grenaded both birfs in Old Sluice. Too lazy to change 'em and didn't want to hold up the group, so I ran it to Buck Island in 2wd with a little extra weight as needed!

True story. Most of us had never met before. Anyhow, when it was clear I was gonna have to stop and change the birfs, Marlin offered to stay with me. Never met him before, but his trail cameradere was always there! His wife wasn't too happy tho. Seems he had just finished the body work on the truck, and it was perfectly straight. By the time we got down Big Sluice, it was just the two of us now, it was now dusk, and a miscalculation based on failing visibility left him with a big dent in his freshly straightened truck. We camped at the last campground past the slabs, because TLCA wasn't 'worthy' of the Springs at that point.

Also, one guy, Alan somethingorother turned out to live about 6 blocks from me! Three more had made the trek from PV, about 1/2 hour south of me. Kind of funny how the word got out about the run in the first place.

And as far as the tire thing goes, I actually took my 32s off to run the tru-tracs just for that run. They came off a parts rig I had in my garage. One of the other guys on the run liked them so much, he bought them off of me when we got back to SoCal. An old friend of Greg Pfeiffers that died shortly after.

Lots of OLD memories.

Nother true story. The guy on Page 4 with the baby blue 40 in Little Sluice was Scott Dorsey, one of the PV guys. He showed up at Loon with his bone stock 73, and I mean bone stock down to the P-metric military tires. Dan Schuler and Marlin both tried to talk him out of running the con with such a pretty rig. But of course Scott would have nothing of it.

I took Scott aside and told him that he should follow me, and that I would pick a line that wouldn't necessarily be the line of choice for me, but that if he could follow, I would guarantee that he wouldn't mess up the truck. Yeah I was bluffing a little bit, but I figured he needed a little encouragement after dealing with Dan and Marlin. Scott followed me, and never did dent his truck.

Greg [white fj40 in the overhead shot] blew out his exhaust system near the end of the run. It was a LONG noisy ride home down the 395, and he got a horrible windburn. We all had a good party in Tahoe after the run.

I believe that first run using Wentworth was followed the second year by someone rolling pretty hard... leading the future use of Loon for entry. There have been no more Rubithons entering from wentworth.

I am fairly sure that I have an article from 4WD Action on the 2nd Rubithon. I'll find it and post it.

I resemble that remark, and I'm highly unsalted. I got busted driveline parts older than your diapers

However, I am not as old as Mark :flip:

After talking with Marlin and Chris at the Bakersfield Rally yesterday, I just had to go back and re-read this thread again.

If anyone talks to Marlin in the next day or two, just mention the name Mike Grear and see what he says.
