member discounts?

I'm a new TLCA member. I got the impression there may be discounts. I've been researching lots for parts to restore my '75 and not seen any mention of discounts.

Start with the vendors who advertise in Toyota Trails and those listed as TLCA Associate Members in Trails. Discounts vary from vendor to vendor.

Speaking as a vendor who is not necessarily angling for your business, I might suggest NOT using the approach of "Hi, I am a member of TLCA, can I get a discount?"

This has NOTHING to do with you personally, but is about the subject you brought up. I had an interesting discussion with Clutchee about JUST THIS TOPIC just yesterday. Not saying he did it either. Just in talking with him, I was reminded about this particular 'sore' spot and shared it with him. As a long-time supporter of TLCA, I give the Association some deference for some of the tactlessness of a few of its members.

As a vendor, I know it can leave a bad impression of TLCA, and the BOD has had to deal with the fallout from this kind of stuff before, so it just deserved mentioning.

Best

Mark A.

That puts the onus on the vendor to ask if a customer is a TLCA member. Is that your approach, Mark?

Mark,

I agree there has to be some sort of better way to ask for a discount.

But with some vendors you have to ask for it immediately or you won't get it. Our local Toyota dealer gives a piddlely amount of 10% which sounds OK, but their prices are also jacked up higher than list. If you don't ask before you get the price quote you won't get it. Their claim is it takes too much time to figure it out at the end. Now the other semi local Toyota dealer their first question is, "Are you in the Cruiser club?" The parts salespeople basically lead you into saying Yes even if you aren't because then they can punch in different numbers before starting the price quote. Their list prices are lower and their discounts vary from 5-25% depending upon the part.

Unless a vendor has TLCA discount listed on their webpage or in their associate listing I generally don't ask for a discount. Maybe I'm missing out? However, I generally do business with the same people over and over unless there is a specific piece they don't have. I do always thank them for advertising in TT.

Mark

How would you suggest he do it then?

My approach would be -- "Hi, I see that you are a TLCA advertisor/associate member. Can you tell me if you offer an special discount/promotion for TLCA members."

I was thinking the the same thing. Something more like "Do you offer a discount for TLCA members?" Not "I'm a TLCA member, do I get a discount?"
