Whats this componet (2 Viewers)

Above the heater fan which sits on the passenger side of the firewall, there is a part that is about the thickness of a cigar and about 2 inches long with one wire at each end. My question is what is it what does it do and is it important. My said truck is a bj42 1981.

That part is a resistor that allows you to operate your heater motor with 2 speeds. Low speed, the current goes through the resistor, high speed goes directly to the motor.
