G'day, I'm new to this so take it easy on me. Iv got a hj47 1984 diesel cruiser ute. There's a box with rounded corners that has a plug at the back end underneath the right hand side of the ute, it's below the fuel tank bolted to the chassi there's two hoses that come out the front end of it with one going to the break booster and the other going to the back of the alternator, any help much appreciated thanks

Welcome! It's a vacuum tank. There is a vacuum pump attached to the back of the alternator that supplies vacuum for your brake booster.

Now we need more pictures of you Cruiser. We all love pics!

It's a vacuum sensor. If I remember right, on my 1981 BJ42 (that I sold a few years ago), it would light up the Brake dash light if it didn't sense vacuum. But, it's been awhile, so maybe someone else can confirm that.
