Ok so it's not on an 80 but I get lots of nifty ideas from you guys here so I hope you bear with me.

I have a 1997 Ssangyong Istana aka Mercedes Benz MB100 van. Its powered by a Mercedes OM662 engine.

Recent work done last october 2012:
-new oem water pump
-new rad hoses
-new oem clutch fan by gmb
-newly rodded/overhauled oem radiator
-new oem rad cap
New oem coolant jug
-filled with correct coolant mix

Problem is at speeds over 110kph, the temperature starts to creep up to 3/4 of the gauge.

When the clutch fan was new, it would just keep silent and when temp would reach the halfway mark at speeds, I could hear it roar to life and lower the temp to below 1/2 again. Is that how is supposed to work? Lately I don't hear it working even as the temp goes up. It would sometimes come on at around 3/4 but not enough to pull the temp back to normal. I'm not losing coolant, btw. And there is no other fluid mixing with the coolant when you check the rad.

What could be wrong? Could adding silicone oil to the fan clutch help despite the relatively new fan clutch?

Local ambient temps here are hot. Ambient is around 37 deg celsius. Got me thinking that the oem fan clutch I got could have been designed for the colder Korean domestic market.

And for required 80 content: i just put in an new thermostat, water pump, and rad cap on my 80 during the timing belt change and she runs like a dream. Chalk one up for team Toyota.

Sounds like the Ssangyong Istana muffler bearings are shot:p
I have no idea, but from your description, and as it would relate to my 80, I would look at the fan clutch like you stated:meh:

look for threads about adjusting the tension on the thermal spring that engages the fan clutch.

I need to find a link to that thermal spring thingie. If anyone has them bookmarked or something, id appreciate the help :)

Or tips to make the fan clutch spool up faster

the spring thing will make it spool up sooner (at a lower temperature)

if you can disassemble the fan clutch and drain out the fluid, a thicker silicone would probably make it spin faster when it is spinning (afaik).

Here is a post about the spring:

Great read! im thinking about just adding more oil first. Buddies say the oem gmb clutch fan dont have much fluid in them even when new.

For those who need an idea. Here is what the van looks like:

And here is the actual fan clutch installed last October:

Here is some required Land Cruiser content. Taken at the local Land Cruiser specialist shop that does work on the MB100 also:

this does not qualify as 80 tech content for this thread...this time i'll boot you to mercedes forum...next time i'll just delete everything

My bad. Thanks for the heads up.

Here's what we found when we opened up the rad:

So I just elected to get a replacement from Korea by Threestar:

I hope this ends my overheating woes so I can go back to modding the 80 :) Thanks again to everyone.

what is that in the radiator?....are you running pure water in the radiator, if you are....you are going to have some serious corrosion problems.
