It's also possible that it was done correctly when first built and then "reconfigured". I don't know.

I could not be happier with my red 40. So Thankful for it. That being said I have definitely found some unusual repairs that were done (read JB weld, expanding foam sealant on transmission etc..) Maybe this was another one.
 
No idea on the builder but as they say "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". It would have been nice however if they did a better imitation.
Glad no one got hurt and the only damage was a little embarrassment. the jeep guy probably went straight to his buddies with a new
"why jeeps are better story "
 
I agree with the rest that those bubble gum welds were cracked and rusting for sometime. You are lucky it happened when it did so you can have a good fab shop fix that mess. I don't like to see that kind of work by anyone. A weld that doesn't look good won't be very strong.
