I have a very minor whining sound at highway speed only ... not really all that loud at all. I notice that it lessens when I take my foot off the gas. The LC specialist I purchased the vehicle from said it is normal for the 80 Series...but he is a used car dealer...so I don't put much stock in what he says.

I recently had a lot of basic service done ... including changing the oil in the Differentials.....have not noticed it as much of late...maybe I just tune it out now..:)

Mine is VERY loud, I hope this is it, otherwise I will be on a mad hunt trying to find it. I decided that I am going to dig in tonight, pull the 3rd and take it in. One more thing done on the truck anyways.

I will be sure to post back here when I have results.

edit: Just thought about it some more, after further reading I am going to replace the u-joints first, then if that doesn't fix it I'll pull the 3rd. Otherwise, if I do both repairs at the same time I will never know what the actual fix was. (Telecom troubleshooter coming out in me)

We had no real problem changing them in Brian's. IIRC the only "special" tools we used were a dial indicator, 12 ton press, big bearing splitter, 1/2" torque wrench and a 1/4" beam type in/lb torque wrench YMMV.

Most of the time if something is failing in a diff you will see evidence on the drain plug magnet, a fine gray powder for bearings and/or fine slivers or chips for gears.

Said I would report back so here it is:

U-joints did not fix the noise. Next step will be to pull the third and have it serviced (replace bearings, seals, check backlash) Will post back when that is done.

Tools: Any local recommendations for the service? Thinking Toy Specialists . . . . Thanks!

just caught my eye............this thread reminds me of a trip to the rear end shop back in 86 with my 40......same noise and no noise........anyhow I pulled the carrier out and took it to "IWE Rear Ends Only" in Vancouver. Ian put a pinion cross shaft in and set the crown up with "Best contact". The interesting part of this story is that he said the what mr T intended for you to change that cross shaft when it started to show signs of wear it was sacrificial and saved wear on the spider gears and it only cost about $8 bucks. I changed mine one more time before I sold it...............anybody try this.

Yup, I have sold/installed quite a few cross-shafts... its definatly not the answer for all diff problems, but it is often a problem in older Cruisers (real high miles). I can't say I have personally swapped one on an 80 Series... but I have pulled out some really high mileage units (190k, 230k, etc.) that were absolutely clean.

I'm going to do my own, the locals that I have been getting info and will be getting help from do it on the side, so cant offer their services. Some have had it professionally done, but I'm not sure which shops they used. Our meet is on Friday in Tempe, stop by or post on the local forum. If you can make it to the meet, I would be happy to go for a ride and see what it sounds like?

I might finally be getting around to getting my buddy in the shop to do mine. He is nervous that our press here in the shop won't get the bearings off. I ordered carrier bearings, axle seals, pinoin bearing and crush sleeve. I have some BG synthetic gear lube that is 75-90 weight, it was free so I hope it is ok to use. He said he would do it today because I plan on driving it to Savannah tomorrow for St. Patty's day! I also need an alignment and and oil change, think I will be sticking with M1, but what weight oil is the most popular in the dirty south? I really hope this does take care of this noise, I can almost hear it around town now around 35-45 also and is really really agitating me!!

Cary, did you replace your pinion bearing yet? Did this remedy the issue?
