Mike,
Here is a quote from the email Al sent me. Hope he doesn't mind.
I had to put in an old HD to find it.

"Since you're building your own rear bumper, thought you'd get a kick
out of our 4+Plus rear 80 series bumper. We cut off the frame rails
right behind the rear body mounts, weld in a 3/8" plate steel
crossmember to carry the new bumper, which allows us to run the
receiver right in the middle of the main section, loosing no ground
clearance. We gain about 9" of clearance this way. Bumper carries a
37" MTR no worries."

Thanks as usual Photo.

Don't think I'd go that route though. Cutting off the rear crossmember is no biggie, but I wouldn't cut the frame only to weld more steel back. My current bumper also serves as the rear crossmember. (Can send you some unmounted pics if ya want). Mine utilizes the OEM frame holes (with captive nuts inside). .... also has the 2" receiver through the main beam. This way - EVERYTHING is always totally reversible so long as you weld back in a crossmember - heck you could put the OEM bumper back on. I think it's key to keep the factory holes is possible.

Of course opinions always vary - which is why we always see so many cool designs on stuff, but just food for thought.
