Operation Manual / Owner's Manual - FJ40

Item 13 in the early tool roll Content List is the Operation Manual. Not surprisingly, this manual is often missing from the kit. Including the correct manual will provide a nice finishing touch to a refurbished tool roll. But finding a manual in decent shape may prove to be a challenge.

Images of the original covers from North America FJ40 manuals follow. These are from (Mud) and the internet. Some of the manuals do not have dates; dates provided are estimates based on available information. Please post corrections or additional manual images.

These manuals were provided with the large tool rolls.

1961-62 : This manual includes an image of a frame number beginning with '1'. (hdjtachtig)

Operation Manuals or Owner's Manuals were not included as part of medium tool rolls or zipper pouch tool kits. Even so, having an original manual will complement any OEM tool kit.

1969-71: Undated cover. Rectangular turn signals, no parking lights on front bib. Includes fold-out electrical wiring diagram attached to inside back cover. Two versions of this undated manual. 69-70 has the TEQ pinwheel logo on the back cover, 70-71 has the TEQ logo on the back cover. Both versions printed in Japan.

1976. Owner's Manuals were completely redone in 1976. For the first time, the content was written in the U.S. and then sent to Japan for printing. Prior to 1976, the manuals were written in Japan in Japanese, and then translated into English. The information presentation was changed to include more photographs, and key information was listed on the back cover for easy reference. Front and back covers are orange.

I'm looking to reproduce the original tool roll if no one else is doing this and make it available at a hopefully reasonable cost. The problem is I do not have an original to use as a pattern. Would anyone be willing to loan me theirs to create the pattern? If someone IS reproducing these please let me know. I'll just buy one.

G.
I have an original from 1970 that I may be willing to let you use to pattern off of as long as it is non destructive. I live in mn and can mail it speedy delivery.

Someone else on the forum is really close to making these available so I'm not going to reinvent the wheel.

Thanks,

Toyota Adjustable Wrench

An Adjustable Wrench (or Monkey Wrench for FJ25 kits) has been part of Land Cruiser tool kits from the beginning. The wrench included with Land Cruiser kits is 250mm long; a 200mm adjustable wrench was included in kits for other vehicles.

Markings on the adjustable wrench can be used to identify which kit(s) it was part of.

Here's a group picture featuring adjustable wrenches from the beginning through today. The earliest wrenches include the TEQ logo. Later wrenches are marked TOYOTA MOTOR without the logo, and post-FJ40 wrenches are marked TOYOTA. There are subtle design differences: the recessed area on the leftmost wrench and the two TOYOTA wrenches is slightly shorter than the others, and the two TOYOTA wrenches are slightly shorter overall than the others.

IMG_1517.JPG

The reverse side. All wrenches are marked JAPAN except the leftmost wrench, which is unmarked, and the rightmost wrench, which is marked KOREA. All wrenches are marked ANGLE WRENCH except the rightmost wrench, which is marked ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.

IMG_1519.JPG

Tool Box and Large Tool Roll. The bottom wrench is found in the Tool Box and early Large Tool Rolls through 1963, which included the 2-piece, 23mm lug wrench. It can be identified by the TEQ logo and the raised, oval pad.

The top wrench is found in later Large Tool Rolls from 1963 through 1969, which included the 1-piece 21mm lug wrench. It can be identified by the TEQ logo and absence of the raised, oval pad.

IMG_1510.jpg

Canvas and Vinyl Medium Tool Roll and Zipper Bag. The bottom wrench is from the Canvas Medium Tool Roll, and is identical to the wrench above it which is from the Vinyl Medium Tool Roll. On both these wrenches, the adjustable gear is held with a slotted screw.

This same wrench is found in early TOYOTA MOTOR TEQ Zipper Bag kits.

The top two wrenches are from later TOYOTA MOTOR TEQ Zipper Bag kits and TOYOTA MOTOR Zipper Bag kits. These can be identified by the pin (no slot) that holds the adjustable gear. The lettering of TOYOTA MOTOR differs on these two, the top wrench has larger, narrower letters than the other.

IMG_1513.jpg

Later Versions. Adjustable wrenches marked TOYOTA are found in post-FJ40 Land Cruiser tool kits. The bottom wrench is from such a kit, and is marked ANGLE WRENCH and JAPAN on the reverse. The top wrench was purchased from Toyota in February 2013, and is marked ADJUSTABLE WRENCH and KOREA on the reverse.

Toyota Screwdrivers - Part 2

Continuing the search for wood handle, tang-through, screwdrivers, that could be used as replacements for OEM screwdrivers in tool rolls. An earlier post looked at available Kyoto Tool Company (KTC) screwdrivers. This post includes Vessel and TOP screwdrivers as well.

Grouped by brand.
  • KTC - left, top 3
  • OEM - left, bottom 3
  • Vessel - right, top 3
  • TOP - right, bottom 3
full

Grouped by type.
  • 150mm shaft, 8mm Slotted Tip (-) - left, top 4 (TOP, KTC, Vessel, OEM)
  • 100mm shaft, No. 2 Cross Head (+) - right, top 4 (KTC, TOP, Vessel, OEM)
  • 75mm shaft, 5.5mm Slotted Tip (-) - bottom 4 (KTC, OEM, Vessel, TOP (left-to-right))
full

Handle Detail.

full

Vessel screwdrivers are made in Japan. Vessel supplied the wood handle screwdrivers used in the Toyota Large and Medium tool rolls. These are the 350 series, high gloss hardwood handles with 6 lateral grooves, tang-through with large end-caps, pinned through ferrules with a highly polished finish. In the 350 series, cross-head screwdrivers have black handles for easy identification.

KTC screwdrivers are made in Japan. These are the MD/PD series, hardwood handles with 6 lateral grooves, tang-through with large end-caps, crimped ferrules with a polished finish (the 150 mm is not as polished as the others).

TOP screwdrivers are made in Japan. These are maple handles with 5 lateral grooves, tang-through with large end-caps, pinned through ferrules with a satin finish. One vendor comments: "The tips of these screwdrivers are quite soft when compared to most screwdrivers. During very heavy use the tip may deform. This is not a fault, but a purposeful feature. Rather than the driver tip holding it's shape and slipping, they will try to conform to the screw's socket and purposefully drive the screw. This may mean that they can be difficult to extract from the screw socket at times, but they will rarely, if ever slip."

Dimensions. An important consideration for large tool roll screwdrivers is the handle diameter. Especially for large tool roll that have been exposed to moisture, shrinking fabric will result in smaller loops for the screwdrivers. There are a double row of stitches between loops #8 and #9; one row can be removed to enlarge the corresponding loop.

The table below summarizes dimensions (in mm) for OEM screwdrivers from both large tool rolls and medium tool rolls, in addition to the Vessel, KTC, and TOP screwdrivers. All screwdrivers being considered are within 1 or 2 millimeters of the OEM handle diameter. Please note the OEM screwdrivers in the photos are from the medium tool roll.

Screwdrivers.jpg

Summarizing the characteristics of these screwdrivers.
  • KTC. With natural color handles and polished ferrules, these are a close match to the OEM screwdrivers. Sharp-eyed observers may note the lack of pinned ferrules.
  • TOP. While the natural color handles and pinned ferrules closely resemble OEM screwdrivers, the satin finish ferrules are an obvious difference.
  • Vessel. The handle color and high gloss finish are a distinctive difference from the OEM screwdrivers.

Toyota Hammer - Part 2

Additional pictures and details of Maruki and OH hammers. Here's a group picture featuring hammers from the beginning through today.

  • TOYOTA marked OH hammer, service tool, available today
  • OH hammer, stainless steel, available today (OH-s)

Top Row: OH later used, OH early used, MARUKI
Bottom Row: OH early unused, TOYOTA, OH Stainless

Maruki Hammers
The early large tool rolls included a Maruki hammer. The hammer is marked with the Maruki logo and MARUKI on one side of the head, and #1 inside a rectangle on the other. The Maruki logo is a circle, bisected by 1 vertical line, and crossed by 2 horizontal lines. The #1 indicates a 1 pound hammer.

The Maruki hammer pictured has been used. The markings on the head, especially the logo side are worn, but still visible. The handle appears to be original, and is identical to other Maruki hammer handles.

In comparison to the OH hammers, the Maruki handle is longer, and the head somewhat shorter. The Maruki head is slightly tapered, while the OH head is not. The Maruki peen is round; the OH peen is elongated.

OH Hammers
Later rolls had the OH hammer, One Hand is the brand. The logo, an O overlaid with an H is on one side of the head, with JAPAN below in small letters. The other side is marked 450G with 1 below, or just 1, indicating 450 grams or 1 pound. Both the JAPAN and 1 marks can be very faint and difficult to see. It appears the 450G marking was removed around 1969. The JAPAN mark was removed later, and does not appear on current OH hammers.

Three OH tool roll hammers are pictured above. Two are lightly used, the other is from a tool roll that was never used and packed away with most of the tools still wrapped in plastic.

Two contemporary OH hammers are pictured. One is the Toyota service tool, the other a stainless steel OH hammer. In comparison to the earlier OH hammers, the diameter of the head is larger and the striking edge of the head is beveled. Both the OH and 1 marks are much more distinct on the newer hammers, even when compared to unused tool roll hammer (OH-c).

Very early OH hammers have a noticeably larger logo, and the head (except for the ball peen and poll) is painted black. These hammers are found in early (1963-65) Large Tool Rolls 21mm.

Some OH hammers are also marked on the handle, TRADE OH-logo MARK. I have only seen these as individual tools, not as part of a Toyota tool kit.

Refurbishing Hammers
Tool roll hammers may have condition issues even if they were not subject to heavy use. Especially if stored in damp tool rolls, rusty heads and damaged/grimy handles are not uncommon. With a little effort, they do clean up nicely. Remove rust with a hand brush and polish with Simichrome or similar polish. Fine steel wool and a light touch will remove layers of accumulated grime from the handle. Polish with Renaissance Wax or similar to help protect the wood.

wscbill,

Thanks for all the hard work and fact finding. I doubt my rig will ever rate a "correct" tool kit, but I can certainly appreciate all the hard work and dedication you've put in to the mission. This is what I love about this community...

OEM Keys / Key Cover

The set of keys for my 1976 FJ40 was a conglomeration of after-market items. A cheap, plastic tag, on a give-away ring, with a couple of hardware store keys.
IMG_1640.jpg

How about an OEM set instead? The ignition key for 1973-82 FJ40s is Ilco TR33 or equivalent. There are 6 possibilities for the ambulance door key, mine is Dominion TA11. Online sellers currently offer reproduction OEM ignition keys with the TEQ logo. The rear door key (90999-00011-04) is available from a dealer on eBay as well. These key blanks are slightly shorter than their after-market equivalents, but were not a problem for the lock shop to duplicate.

New keys deserve a new cover or ring. The OEM key cover (69555-20010) is available; MetricTLC offers a combination key ring/tool in the shape of a FJ40 bezel.

Large Tool Roll - Nepros - KTC - OEM

Lots of possibilities for a large canvas tool roll without the tools:

  • Use it as the basis for your collection of OEM tools
  • Stock it with your favorite tool brand(s)
  • Build a custom tool roll based on some theme
I picked up an empty tool roll a while back. It was an early, large tool roll designed to fit the 2-piece lug wrench, and it was in great shape. Decided to build a custom roll with high-quality tools from Japan. I had a few OEM pieces that were in good shape that could be incorporated as well.

Kyoto Tool Company (KTC) supplied tools for Toyota tool kits. KTC has a premium brand called Nepros. The roll was stocked with Nepros tools where available, KTC otherwise, leaving room for the OEM pieces.

24157-1384187400-2b31d208fabc96efb1f071e0f0a568bc.jpg

Neither Nepros or KTC has wooden handle hammers. OH (see Toyota Hammer for details) has a stainless steel, ball peen hammer with a wooden handle.

The 2-piece lug wrench in these early kits fit 23mm lug nuts. KTC has a 2-piece lug wrench that fits 23mm and 21mm lug nuts, which will cover both early and later Land Cruisers.
24158-1384187400-c3f371940ed98231d56bc0a7cef5f30f.jpg

The Nepros 250mm adjustable wrench is a work of art. The KTC wrench holder is identical to what came with the original tool rolls except for the logo and color. The 1-piece, loop handle, spark plug wrench is OEM from the the large tool roll.
24159-1384187478-abb88c8cfa6a9501fcdd1f701e1a2b61.jpg

Wasn't able to fully match the wrench sizes provided with the large tool rolls, but these Nepros wrenches should work just fine.
24160-1384187478-5725d5e13c61784298098cf9fb638cea.jpg

The Nepros wooden handle screwdrivers have a great finish and work very well with JIS screws.
24161-1384187478-0671c5cbd5aa25a886349aaf683a33fe.jpg

Got this grease pump for $10. Cleaned up nicely with Simichrome polish and Renaissance wax.
24162-1384187559-267b46702fdb3c0b7eb8c667d610428f.jpg

The Engine Adjust Kit is another OEM tool. This one is actually from the later version of the large tool roll.

The Content List is an original, and from an early version of the large tool roll, item #3 in the list references the 23mm Hub Nut Box Wrench.

Here's a summary of the tools included with this tool roll, including the brand and associated part number. More information about Nepros and KTC tools can be found on their web sites. Both Nepros and KTC tools can be ordered from the Nepros web site, submit a contact form with KTC requests.

Zipper Bag (TEQ Yellow) - OEM

Whether refurbishing a tool kit, collecting tools for a kit, or purchasing a full/partial kit, it is useful to know what tools came in the kit originally. The pdf attached to OEM Tool Kit Inventory includes a description of tools in the various kits. This post highlights the Zipper Bag tool kit, provided with FJ40s and others between 4/72-1/79, marked with the TEQ logo and including the yellow jack handle.

A new FJ40 owner would find the tool kit under the driver's seat.
IMG_1679.JPG

IMG_1680.JPG

IMG_1687.JPG

The assortment of tools provided is not as extensive as in the prior kits, the large and medium tool rolls. For example, fewer wrenches and screwdrivers, and no hammer or grease pump.

The bag appears to be vinyl coated canvas, with a fabric binding and 2 handles. There is a small side pocket, between the ends of the handle on the marked side. There is a brass zipper, marked YKK on both sides of the pull tab and also on the zipper box.

The yellow, cast jack handle is unmarked, approximately 30cm long, and the attached rod has a flattened end. Earlier cast handles were marked STO and/or the end of the attached rod was round. Later cast handles are brown and slightly longer.
IMG_1690.JPG

IMG_1692.JPG

The 250mm adjustable wrench is marked TOYOTA MOTOR. The adjustment gear is held with a slotted screw. Adjustable wrenches in early kits come with the slotted screw; later kits include an adjustable wrench with similar markings that uses a pin instead.

The 2-piece spark plug wrench has 4 holes, and is marked 20.6 TOYOTA MOTOR JAPAN. The wrench bar is highly polished; later versions have a dull finish.

The screwdriver has a yellow, plastic handle marked TOYOTA MOTOR. The shank can be removed from the handle and has a flat blade at one end, and cross-head at the other. Later 2-piece screwdrivers have a black, plastic handle. There is a similar yellow-handle screwdriver marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR, however this was not included in Land Cruiser tool kits.

The 200mm pliers has a slotted screw, and is marked TOYOTA JAPAN, with the KTC PAT mark on the back. Later pliers have a plain-head screw and omit the KTC mark.

Two wrenches (10 x 12, 14 x 17) are held with a yellow, plastic clip. They are marked TOYOTA MOTOR on the raised handle, with NICKEL CHROME VANADIUM on the back. Later wrenches are marked SPECIAL ALLOY on the back and come with a red, plastic clip.

The lug wrench fits 21mm lug nuts and is marked TOYOTA MOTOR, with MADE IN JAPAN on the back and a symmetric pry tip. Starting around 5/77 the lug wrench changed to have an asymmetric pry tip. This later lug wrench is marked TOYOTA MOTOR JAPAN on the out side of the handle.

This version of the tool kit appeared in Land Cruiser sales brochures in 1978 and 1979. Interestingly, the 1978 photo omits the adjustable wrench, which was part of the kit at that time.

Toyota Inspection Lamp

The Inspection Lamp was a standard item on FJ40s and other Land Cruisers. Although the Inspection Lamp would seem to be a tool, it was not included as part of the OEM tool kits.

The Inspection Lamp plugs into a socket that was located under the dash on the passenger side firewall for early FJ40s; around 9/71 the socket was moved to inside the glove box.

The early inspection lamp has a brown cord and brown plastic socket in a metal base, with a wire cage. It includes 2 wire hooks, one at the base, the other fixed at the top of the cage.

The inspection lamp was packed in a blue, vinyl bag with a snap cover. The bag was marked with the TEQ logo near the snap. The bag and the plug were also marked with the manufacturer's TR logo, Tokai Rika Co., of Nagoya.

A new FJ40 owner would find the later black inspection lamp in the glove box, inside a somewhat different blue vinyl bag.

This later inspection lamp has a black cord, with a black plastic socket and base. The wire cage is smaller than the earlier version and the center ring and the 2 hooks are now flat metal instead of wire. The hook at the top of the cage can move independently.

The other hook is located on the cord and can be moved as needed. The plug is marked with the TR logo.

Inspection lamps (12 volt) are still available from Toyota, part number 81370-60010; the 24 volt version, 81370-60040 is discontinued. The current lamp is very similar to what was included with later FJ40s except the hook on the cord is no longer provided.
