Hi,

I recently had 2 codes indicating that my computer on my 1989 FJ62 was bad. I replaced the computer today with one from a 1988 FJ62. The part number of the ECU I took off differed from my used replacement part. 89661-60020 (1988) and 89661-60021 (1989).

Everything connected up fine and the engine no longer shows any codes in diagnostic mode.

Does anyone know if running an 1988 ECU in a 1989 3FE will cause any issues? What are the differences between the ECU's other than the different part #'s?

Thanks.

I don't think there are any differences to worry about. the later 80 series 3fe uses a different computer, different plugs.

There seem to be 2 different color connectors- if you have the same color connectors on the ECU and your harness,
you're golden.

That said, I don't know that crossing the colors (grey and yellow, maybe?) would matter.

Yes, from what I could find, the ECU changed for 89, and then the FJ80's ecu used a different pin configuration altogether.
That said, there only seems to be one 62 efi schematic, so...

I thought the California specific trucks have yet another ECU, that takes the input from the EGR temp sensor, which 49 state trucks do not have.

Thanks for the replies. The color of the receptors are different in fact different than the computer I took off. The wire connectors are grey and so were the old ECU's receptors. New receptors (on the replacement ecu) I'm pretty sure are a different color. Perhaps green. I'll check tomorrow.

I looked up the part numbers on toyodiy and I saw two separate computers for CA spec models. Neither of the ECU's had I had were the CA spec.

So was this confirmed? Are the ECU's interchangeable? I bought a replacement engine harness that came in with the grey plug(89/90). But my ECU is yellow(88). After changing the two different style connectors for the cold start injector switch and the water temp, am I good to go?

89661-60011 (2/88-1/90) is an analogue to 89661-60010 (8/87-2/88), so they are functionally the same. Likewise, 89661-60021 (2/88-1/90) is an analogue to 89661-60020 (8/87-2/88). The ECU in my CA-spec January 1989 FJ62 is 89661-60011.
