I asked this on the 80scool board years ago with no response, but did any of the US 80 series (any year) have a tcase with a removable PTO plate? Of course the PTO gear is a whole 'nother issue...

Nope, sorry. All North American 80's have a solid transfercase housing. No removable plates. My Japanese domestic models fiche shows some cases with a removable plate.
