10.3 L per 100 KMs highway

3B, Heavy BJ60. Turbo. 4.11 gears, 33 inch tires. 100 km/hr average.

i've never pushed it much beyond 750 km in a tank as the needle gets pretty low then. But I am putting in on average 75-80 litres of fuel at that time.

Love the sig pic, but you should offset the front pumpkin!

Around 700 - 760 km (435- 472 miles) per tank of fuel with my daily driver. 8.0 - 9.3 km/L

35 BFG MT KM2

Stock fuel tank 95l

I wonder what it will be like after I put in the H151F I have in the shed?

Not necessarily...

The Auto obviously only gets better MPG if you spend much time going fast enough to use the higher OD ratio!

The rest of the time at slower speeds, the manual will be slightly better.

Some of you need to be more descriptive on their data. 900kms to a tank doesn't mean much unless you do the math on the amount of fuel used.

1984 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ60.

-3B 5 speed. 380k.
-SOA
-35x12.5r15 Cooper STT's
-4:88's
-bumpers and roof rack.
-3 inch mandrel exhaust to a Flowmaster 40, then 4inch exiting under the driver rear door.

I average 19-20mpg consistently city and highway, from spring to fall. In the winter I see between 14-16mpg city and highway. It works hard to do 105-110km/h, I'm sure if I paced at 90km/h I would see much better economy. I keep my air filter clean, oil changes every 4000-5000kms max, fuel filters every 15,000kms, and Stanadyne every third tank (but I've really never notices a difference).

1991 PZJ70 ragtop
35" boots
stock 4.11 gears
R151
10L/100km at 90 km/hr
swapped a R141 into it for better off road gears
now 12L/100km at 90 km/hr

KingSpence, I have never been a fan of the BJ60. But yours makes me drool. And at 20MPG summer? I have a 13BT auto with 4.11's and 31's and I get 18-22MPGish. Sounds like I need to do some engine work.

I just sold mine a couple months ago but this is what I was getting:

Constant 18 mpg around town. Up to 23 hwy (US mpg). One time I dropped into the mid teens on a road trip. Speed limit was 70 mph and there was a 35 mph headwind. I was never able to get into 5th gear. It was hard pushing through that wind on me and the truck.

the auto locks in 3rd and OD.

in reality,i have yet to see a manual HDT get better fuel mileage than the auto. anything with the H151 sucks.

A440F has no 3rd lockup. A442F does. Manual and auto HJ61s usually have at least 1l/100km difference on average, manual using less fuel. Well, mine gets about 12l/100. Guy I know with a manual HJ61 gets between 10-11l/100km. The difference gets bigger offroad. Auto is nice, but you lose the feeling of low down torque with the auto unless it's locked up, which is a pity.

the A440 does suck but it is smoother than the H55F benind the 12HT which in my books makes up for the 1L/100 difference.

less mileage with manual, poorer O/D ratio.

I can attest to that. RPMs are much too high at highway speeds. 5th gear is so close to 4th it's ridiculous.

But, fuel mileage at speeds under 90km/h is pretty good for such a heavy truck. I use 5th whenever coasting above 60km/h.

Mileage will go out the window if you mash the go pedal too much though.

I have a 100 series 4 speed automatic [A442F] of 1998 vintage with the HDT-FTE 4.2 turbo intercooled diesel and the best I get is 24 miles per Imperial gallon.
This is just under 20 USmpg and 11.77 l/100kms.

The type of use is mixed country roads mostly with some fast motorway work. The terrain is undulating and roads twisty. Average speed seldom exceeds 30mph [around 50kph] even though driving is often between 50 and 60 mph traffic allowing and around 75mph on multi-lane roads which make up less than 10% of the total. When towing, which makes up less than 5% of my total, and when driving harder than normal, the consumption rises to between 20 and 22mpg Imperial.

Well i've got an HDJ-81 4.2ltd and have done a few long distance trips and the best i got on a 90 liter tank was 962km before i chickened out i believe it filled at 87liters. Average speed was 100-105kph and very little hills, i have an OME 2.5" lift and 285/75/16's which i added 10lbs more in, ARB bumper, snorkel, power rod and loaded up my friend said he never gets that so i was happy.

By my calculation that is 9l/100kms or 31.4mpg Imperial and just over 26USmpg.

I will say that I find these figures to be somewhere between highly improbable and impossible from an 80 series diesel unless the route was mainly downhill with a favourable wind, which would also explain the very high average speed over that distance.

The driving speed is mainly between 50 to 80 Km. My trips are more highway than stop and go. That being said the stretch of highway that I drive every day is quite hilly on the Upper Level highway here in North Vancouver.
The "Cut" is a very long and steep hill. Watch lots of cars fly by me on the way up the hill.

I'd say it might be true, I have gotten around 10l/100km with slowish driving. Sub 2400 rpm makes a huge difference. I have read that a manual 1HD-T 80 can get 30-35 MPG (imperial) if driven @ 60km/h! WOW I wish I could test that.

Yep I can manage 30+ with steady driving, between larger spanish towns there tends to be long clear roads (few roundabouts and no traffic lights) that are posted @90 KPH, I tend to run around the 80-90 because the police have been more than active with the radar this last 6 months or so, and that nets an easy 30 MPG, I have done (and re done) the calculations and they are very accurate.

regards

Dave

That's a SERIOUS hill to climb every day man! I'm amazed that you get 9.1 L per 100Km with that hill included in your daily commute. You must be driving really conservatively to get that, which cements my belief that pedal-control is one of the biggest variables in fuel consumption.

I've not even started driving my new-to-me HJ60, but in my Merc with OM617 my numbers can go from 7.1 L/100 to as high as 12 L/100 depending on whether I'm flooring it or getting a lot of stop-n-go. I find Italian tune-ups make the numbers really soar. :p

I'm hoping the 5-speed HJ can give me similar numbers. At least that's what I promised the wife.
