Well the Toyota database spews out "Dec 1980" just from entering your VIN (BJ41-0011673) so I think you have the build date correct there Wes

Uhhhhh, the problem with this "entry field" is that it accepts everything and not only a VIN code.
When I type BJ40LVKC, which is from my (ex) '78 BJ40, it tells me that it's built from Aug. 1980 till Sept. 1984.

Most people don't know the difference between VIN number (17 characters) and their model code.
Just saying.

Hi Rudi

But if you type in his "TOYOTA VIN", that is, BJ41-0011673, it comes up with the much more specific answer of 12/80.

This "Toyota VIN" is still used as "the official VIN" here in New Zealand for an old vehicle such as mine ... but we too (like the USA) have since started using much longer VIN codes (so the bureaucrats can store lots of trivial information about our vehicles and impress people with computer-generated statistics/graphs/pie charts and such-like).

I tried my "TOYOTA VIN" number BJ40-014339 but the result is NO RECORDS FOUND
The same result with adding an extra 0 as in BJ40-0014339
Which leads me to believe that this data base with serial number recognition started after 1978?

Rudi

Well this is something I've been wondering about for a very long time Rudi..

Some "Toyota VINs" work while others give the same result as you found..

Running lots of "Toyota VINs" from this thread through it just now and making sure to follow the format: ####-XXXXXXX ... where #### represents the basic model code (such as BJ40), and where there are no spaces, and where XXXXXXX is the frame number (brought up to seven digits with an extra zero or two if necessary) ...... the earliest one I got to work was BJ40ER's November 1978 BJ40.

So I guess this means the recognition of "Toyota VINs" must start with some vehicles actually produced during 1978...

Spotted at the Christchurch A&P show this month by one of my spies:

BJ40_80.jpg

A BJ40 .... which may only have 74000kms on the clock if official records are correct!!!

And the official records also show:
Engine: 0309243
Chassis: BJ40-041120
And build date (from Toyota database): Oct 1979 (but officially here it is registered as being 1980)

Hello guys, I am new here.
I checking on this landcruiser model, 1982???
Not sure but it seems strange coz the engine indicates B(11322-56010) but chassis is FJ40-201748.
Based on the information from the net if the chassis is FJ40 means this model is suppose to
have a gasoline engine right?Means the original motor has been replaced?
Hope someone can help me on this. Thanks you.

Welcome Edskie.

If the Frame Number starts with "FJ40" then it most definitely left the factory with a gasoline engine.

What makes you think it is a 1982? That frame number (0201748) suggests to me it should have started life in 1975 judging from this thread:

Look down between No.3 and No.4 ports on your inlet manifold (by your oil dipstick) as shown in the photo in the first post of this thread.

But you may need to scrape the flat surface there with the blade of a knife first to remove built-up gunge over the numbers..

Hello All, back in 1980 I owned an FJ40 in Alaska. I had a wonderful time with the truck. Here 35 years later I am looking to purchase another one but here in the Philippines nothing is original or as it seems.

I found a nice yellow BJ40 but the registration says 1993
Frame numbers are BJ40-051515
Engine is a B with S/N BFHA-0289493
the fuel tank is external, between the frame
seats are high back. Interior trim is smart but looks like BJ70
Windshield wiper box is on the right so this looks like an original left hand drive.

My problem is that nothing really fits...its in great shape but the interior is very modern while the engine is a B
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Finding a clean car here in Philippines is brutal.
My phone is +639175369290 email is SchofieldAero@gmail.com Thank you, happy driving to all :) Henry

Welcome Henry
Nice clean find mate more photos of interior and also under the hood will help date her but between 80 and 84 is my guess at this stage.

Thanks Ozcrusier. The body looks 80-83, very clean and neat....but the engine is a straight B. Huge Air Filter on the right and simple set up. I want to kick myself because I did not take an engine picture, so caught up looking at everything... here are some more pictures. Tomorrow I head down to Manila to look at a 1983 BJ40 with a 3B engine, he is asking my limit of spending 450,000p (15,056$NZ) Wish me luck Henry

Good guess. It is actually a June 1981 BJ40.
