I am sure this thread has been done before, I went back ten pages on a search of "mods" and came up with nothing on the FJ40. I know me and the rest of the "NEWBIES" would like to know what you seasoned guys think is your best and worst mods. Go ahead and brag about your rigs. Give us new guys something to hope for. The cheapest mods are always the best, and the free ones rule!

I have a 74 FJ40
1, Painless wiring kit, If I ever finish it
2, Removing the guagecluster sheilds, Its so much brighter now.
Thats all I have done, No time for a bad mod yet, Just got my rig

Future projects, dreams and aspirations include an SOA lift, 33's, and a snorkel

My opinion. In order

1. Saginaw Power Steering
2. SM420
3. rear locker

SOA is good for me. and power steering. now all I need another turbo.

power steering is a wonderful thing!!! spring reversal and extending wheelbase was good too.

power steering, I went OEM.

replacing all the old TRE and such.

OME suspension

33x9.5's

add headlight upgrade, done it to all my Cruisers

1- Dana 60 Front axle.( I HATE Fing birfs )
2- Saginaw Power Steering/Shackle reversal
3- SM420
4- Lockers(ARB)
5- Four wheel disc brakes
6- Frame mounted cage(six points), with integrated cradle system for front seats.
7- WARN 8274-50 winch, dual batteries, and a 175A Alt.

Figure out what you want to do with your junk, what your monies will permit, and do it right, the first time. Trying to do too much, and focusing on being cheap will only lead to wasted money, time and sorrow. This IS NOT a cheap endeavor, period.

Best money spent on the truck.....joining the TLCA...hands down....

Brian has some pretty good info out here too... ;)
(thanks man!)

Good luck!

If any of you have done a mod you now regret, please speak up, save me the time and money on doing something stupidor that i will be unhappy with later.

The order might shift a bit depending on my mood ...

1. The disk brakes and a kick a** powerful booster.
2. Power steering. Mainly special because I got rid of all the worn out joints and now have zero road wander.
3. The 5 speed. I would change the gear ratios in the 4500 if I could but being able to do 65 mph at 2500 RPM is nice.
4. Small Block. I could live and be happy with an F or 2F but I do love that sound. Okay, and I enjoy smoke'n kids driving ricers.
5. This may sound silly but "Paint!!!". I love that after 4 years with the body on saw horses I have zero rust.

Power Steering (mine's mini-truck)
Pertronix ignition (or Mel's or whatever)
Lift (mine's 2 inches or so)
Cushy bucket seats
and I just joined the 33x9.5 club
Rear locker (but I haven't tested it for performance yet)

Best Mod You've Done.

Hi All:

Like has been mentioned before, figure whatyou plan on doing with the truck before throwing a bunch of $$ at it. That said, in my opinion the one thing that will help the rig, any rig, off-road is a rear locking differential.

Power steering sure beats "Armstrong," especially on a tight trail. I did a Saginaw conversion on my FJ40.

Rollcage, and good, secure recovery points front and rear on the truck.

Suspension lift and big, aggreessive tread tires. Spring-over axle swaps are awesome when done correctly. Four inch SUA lift is doable for he greenhorn mechanic.

There are many other mods you can do - winches, portal axle assemblies, cross-over steering, and so on. The most important thing is to get out there and get some 'wheeling experience!

Good luck!
