I was always a kid who could fit the round peg into the square hole -- case in point --- I managed to shoe horn a 3FE onto the mounts of my 9/73 FJ40 frame keeping the engine brackets for the 3FE and using late model FJ40 motor mounts beneath.

The fit was incredibly tight and I can see some separation between the belhousing and engine on the lower part where there are not bolts, just the pegs.

Am I going to need custom mounts, or is it just a matter of trying to finagle the engine a little bit more to get it to situate properly?

I am NOT skilled :D

...would have to outsource...

YAY! One more!

I have a 3F-E in my 40 as well! Granted I had someone actually do the lifting, but they had no reported problems, but granted this was using the 2F engine mounts. I'd say just finagle the engine a little bit more.

I'd love to see pics of your setup -- I'm sure I'm going to need lots of help when it comes to steering, brakes, exhaust...

One reason I didn't try to switch mounts on the engine itself is that it seems like alot of engine stuff is connected to the mounts on the 3FE, unlike with the F/2F.

How do you like the 3FE'd 40 so far? Is it going to be worth the pain and credit card meltage?

Absolutely not worth the pain, but it was either rebuild or replace with a 3F-E. Chose the latter. The only think I run currently is my 2F alternator on the 3F engine mount. The smog pump I'm not (yet) running, I don't have the A/C compressor, nor (yet) power steering.

You have to grind down some parts on the 3F-E's intake manifold to fit the master cyl. The steering box req's some adjustment in mounting (not much, not a biggy) and the exhaust downpipes hit the 40's frame. Havn't quite figured out what I'm going to do there yet.

Thanks for the honesty, really makes me not look forward to this project :flipoff2:

I was in a rebuild my F or take advantage of an available 3FE situation. But realistically it would probably be cheaper for me to try to find a 2F or do the unholy Chevy conversion. Fuel injection on the trail seemed like it would be very cool -- I'm sick of carb issues on inclines. Ahh, well, guess I'm just trading one set of problems for another.

Yep, but I figure I now know only 3 people with 3FJ40s. The 3F-E is just PERFECT in a 40 though. It's the way the 40 would have been had it lasted into the late 80s no doubt.

I think if done correctly and stock-as-possible, a 3FJ40 will be worth a lot more than any V8 conversion.
