That release is definitely tight, it has always been that way. I ' had that slide for about 2.5 years,bought it new.
I think you are on the right track with a piece of rubber to slide over it.

Just my opinion, but I think lefty twin sticked with 4.7 gears will give you the most bang for your buck so to speak as far as off road capability, with no negatives for daily/highway driving.

The wind noise is minimal with pelican cases laid on the side. It does increase slightly with higher profile items like Scepter fuel cans, however not enough to make an impact on a trip. The fairing does a good job deflecting the wind.
