I would lock it first in case it needs any movement to lock up (if you don't exercise it regularly). It would suck to take the drive shaft off, then lock the CDL, then not be able to go anywhere because the truck won't move and the CDL won't lock.

I know you're joking, but children don't have the opportunity to choose to protect themselves and everybody is at risk. Unless you home school your children and live on a farm, they are at risk too.

I didn't see where the OP says HOW it dies. If it just cuts off without sputtering, I'd look at the electrical, or the wiring harness. If it sputters out and then chokes out, that is a classic example of a torn air intake hose. You don't even have to take it off and inspect it. Just run duct or...
