    Buying 40 - which engine

Thank you Danger Noodle! I would be driving around town mostly, have a nice daily driver that would take skiing or family to mountains. Have flashbacks driving up I-70 with the pedal to the floor doing 45 mph. The 3fe was fuel injected so should have compensated the fuel mixture for altitude...

    Buying 40 - which engine

Thanks Rick! Never thought about the extra heat or noise... I was starting to pick up the resale value quandary as I am looking for a super clean truck and noticed that the v8s take a hit on price. I wish there was a way to add a turbo or supercharger to the 2f. Forced induction solves the...

    Buying 40 - which engine

Looking to buy a super clean fj-40 and trying to decide if I should go with a v8 or the 2f engine. Previously I had a couple of 80s and a 62... 3fe engine. I live in Boulder, co which is 5,500 feet above sea level and could hardly get my 80 up the hills to go skiing or hiking. I imagine the...

80 series supercharger - New In Box

    HELP: Crank, no start!

Yeah, the auto business is pretty dirty, I blame it on the pay system. I was just giving you a hard time I quit this spring and moved out to Colorado a Realtor now but still love working on cars just take my time and do it right. I wish I still lived out there we could go trailing. I...

91 fj80 in Boulder - I can go up Loveland at about 40-50mph with pedal on floor. I am looking to switch gears in rear diff and install Aussie lockers first available opportunity. Note I hit a Big Horn Sheep on way hwy 6 outside Golden last weekend and truck almost fine minus front bumper...

    HELP: Crank, no start!

Thanks for bashing mechanics, perhaps I should bash service writers/managers who think they are mechanics!!! J/K The compression may have been low due to fuel washing down the cylinders wonder if compression test was wet or dry? Wet compression involves putting some oil in cylinders prior...

Got the call back from the shop.. repairs

And if you find a good one keep them, get referrals. Some of the best mechanics I know are the backyard Bob types, dealerships and chain shops are the worst. There are good guys out there but like a good doctor you can't get in right away and you pay for it but will cost less in the long run...

Got the call back from the shop.. repairs

That's the way it is... Most mechanics would rather get paid hourly like an electrician or a plumber but they don't they get paid by the job. When you get paid by the job you want to make money on every job otherwise you are fixing someones car for free. If you don't like the quote find a new...

    Geniune Toyota Radiator?

I just put in a genuine radiator from dealership and that looks correct. I was suprised to see the large amount of plastic compared to the one I took out. Be careful, I almost broke the plastic on top when installing.

    3F-e idling

Check under hood and see if you can open throttle manually, maybe linkage from pedal broke. Easy check anyway.

Got the call back from the shop.. repairs

I am a mechanic and if I get a car in that I don't want to work on or don't know how to fix, I quote a really high price. If the person says OK than I get paid well and I have the "time/money" to work on it if they say no it is no loss because I didn't want to work on it anyway. The most...

Muffler shop, by law, says it must keep old cat

I have worked as a mechanic for 7 years and am master certified Mercedes, have never heard of this law in Illinois but may be different in Texas. All cats done under Warranty go back to Mercedes all customer pay cats get sold to scrap guy ($20-$50 a pop x 4 on a Benz). I am sure the Muffler...

    Most cost effective locker

Thanks Thanks a lot. I think I will give the rear ausie with lower gears a try. You guys hit the nail on the head, I would be better off buying a new truck with the 1fze engine and factory lockers than swapping axles or the ARB kit. I wasn't even thinking when I bought the truck living in...

    Most cost effective locker

Just moved to Boulder, CO where there is serious off roading compared to Chicago. I am a mechanic and I am looking for the best locker for my stock 91 fj80 (boy is the 3FE slow in the mountains). I don't want to swap my axle housings but am comfortable setting up the ring and pinion. I don't...

    91 FJ80 will not start

What size fuse is it? My guess would be about 10 amps the fuse is probably 15 or 20. It is going to draw less amps than the fuse or else the fuse would blow.

    91 FJ80 will not start

Get a multimeter and Ohm out the wires to your fuel pump should be around 0.0 - 1 Ohm for each wire. I have seen wires corroded or burnt up (at the connector) that would allow the voltage through (10volts at pump) but not allow the amperage through (pump won't run) most likely at the connector...

    Nitrous (NOS) in a 3F?

When was the last time your timing was set. Made a huge difference on my truck, just use a vacuum gauge and it will take 15 minutes. If engine starts to ping back it off.
