Do you or someone you know have eye glasses that get darker when exposed to the sun? This would be a great test to understand level of UV making it through the glass.
Background: I put 3M film on my windshield and side windows to cut back on amount of sun in the cabin. My rear glass was...

Great road trip story.
I hope you have a resource for the VW that is as good as an equivalent to 'mud. Sounds like you are going to need it. ;)
Thanks for sharing.

Rich, here's a link to my stereo installation pics. Polks in my signature line will fit with little door modifications. And, they sound great.
If I had it to do over, I would have created a thin spacer ring for the rears since there is the slightest rub of the window mechanism against the...
Loose wheel &/or trunion bearings can cause this condition under braking.
Ask me how I know.
Have you checked your wheel bearings for proper preload? What are the condition of your trunion bearings?

With 120K miles on the vehicle, I suggest you do the front axle rebuild. There is a great write up in the FAQ section, and elmariachi sells a DVD which gives further insight.
Before you start the job, degrease while everything is still on one piece. You'll thank yourself when you realize...
Nick-

Between the diesel / oil bath prep and the salt water, I suggest you check the ground on the back of the transmission to the body. It is near the tail shaft of the transmission. Other grounds I can think of to check are on...
It's been my experience that Michelin's get really hard when they get old. Hard = poor traction...especially in the wet. Also, low tread depth from an old tire is going to hurt you in the snow.

No "hard core" mudding exposure. I had it off road in a previously harvested corn field. Lots of ruts with soil condition that was moist to muddy. My buddy's H2 with half worn BFG ATs got stuck. Zero issues with the Duratracs. Also had it on ATV trails in the woods, uphill through moist...
Reporting back after 4 months of Duratrac use.
Good background thread here.
You may have read / heard the news about the snow fall that's run through the mid-atlantic states recently.
Before (1st storm over the weekend yielded around 1.5-2' of snow):
After (2nd storm during the week yielded...
Just went through this a couple of months ago as well.
Only difference was that mine was that corrosion froze the speedo gear housing to the transmission housing. PB Blaster did the trick, and the O ring change out was easy after that.
