MARKUS: on my fj40-1978 front hub spindle nuts are 54mm.
autozone and pepboys didn't have the socket, or wanted an arm and a leg for it. Built my own faster than they could get it. I think Man-a-fre has the tool for maybe $20.00????
Try SOR also.

ScottFJ40;
I had same symptoms. It was the slave(clutch release)
cylinder piston(rubber part) just went south. Under FJ, passenger side attached just forward of bell house, is the slave. If the accordian rubber thing is sopping wet with brake fluid, that's the problem. Rebuild or get new one...
Scottfj40. I have fj40, did similiar paint job. 1. don't spend a lot of money or time, not worth it. 2. neutralize or remove all oil or grease on surface, paint won't stick to it Dirt also. 3. don't bother with rust removal. 4. I taped out glass(all of it) then sprayed with Aervoe Industries...
Help need historical info. When did toy start putting disc brake on rear Fj-40's and when did they start putting full float rear axle's and when(if at all) did diff. gear ratio changes occur. Need infor or point me to the right tech article.

hope this helps. Bleeding at the slave is the only place to get the air out of the lines. When you get everything back in place and connected(be sure no cross threading occurs)(I use an anti-seize compound on all connections and bolts, it makes getting everything easier to undo or bleed) fill...
Hope this helps. I bebuilt fj-40 78 front discs and rear cylinders(4- two on each wheel) and I cleaned all the threads with a 10mm x 1.0 tap and die, then put on anti-sieze so I could get them off next time(Brake fluid is hydroscopic and attrack moisture). good luck

:-/I am putting new aftermarket shackles on my 78 fj-40.
They lift up 2". My question(anybody?) is should I get longer shocks. No one at AutoZone could help because all there shocks are referenced to a particular vehicle and they are not able to tell me what shocks are longer than the ones I...
