    wheels and tires question?

I don't know if its the hub on the early axle or perhaps the steering arms, but my 3.5" bs 15x7" rims touch the tie rod end boots after greasing. Well the balancing weights do actually. Thats on the '66 fj40. On my '80 bj40, 3.75" bs rims have no clearance issues on the TRE, but I had to use...

    Two Questions on HEI Installation

I didn't take pictures during the instal :slap: but externally it looks just like Jeremy's. The toyota pin is basically a rivet, you will notice the hole in the gear is larger than the hole in the shaft. I drilled mine out. It sounds bad, and doesn't seem the right thing to do but yeah, the...

    Two Questions on HEI Installation

There are a number of methods you can use in mounting HEI. Some of them seem IMO pretty mickey mouse. I kept the distributor body original GM so I could use a "normal" clamp. The sleeve setups sound like they leak often, and just don't seem to be a long term solution. It is very important to...

    Horrible gas mileage

Hmmm. And here I was thinking taller gearing would help a 40's mileage on the highway. Isn't that the idea of 'rubber OD', or going to an overdrive tranny? My truck seems to get about 13-15mpg. It has 28" tall 235/75/15's which are an inch taller than the stock H78's I pulled off it. I will...

    Lift spring question...

I know a guy running 37's with Emu's and slightly longer greasable shackles :flipoff2: Of course there was a 'little' trimming needed ::) As for springs, compare static arch and spring rates. Then figure out how you want to install those long F150 springs. Sum up the numbers and theres your...

    Spark Plug ???

I run NGK plugs. The champion plugs, at least in the past, were not plated and rusted. I am not a fan of any platinum plug because I prefer to replace them at a shorter/regular interval, so the extra cost is wasted. As for plug temperature, kief is correct. The ability of the electrode to...

    which amby door is right???

The difference between ambi doors I've seen is that the early ones have all four corners square, whereas the newer doors have the bottom outer corner rounded. I guess newer bodied trucks (post '79) have a different rear sill. Not sure on the years though since my truck was retrofitted with a...

    Dual Brake Master

I replaced the stock single cylinder with one from a 70's ford p/u. Its a dual circuit cyl with residual pressure valves for the drums and is a 1" bore. I did not fit any sort of proportioning valve and have not had problems. If you do plan on staying with drum brakes and no booster, I'd...

Weber carb issues, climbing steep angles

I run a different model weber (32 DIR) on my F engined truck and also have had similar issues with it. First off I run the stock fuel pump with no extra pressure regulator. This has not been a problem on my setup as some others have had. It sounds like it isn't a problem on yours either from...

    4x4 shifter makes rattling sound

I slid a short section of heater hose down the shifter so it provided a rubber cushion agianst the shifter gate. It isn't 100% quite, but a hell of a lot better than it used to be. It doesn't interfere with shifting, and it is not visible below the shifter boot.

    Padding and insulation

The stuff I used in mine was 1/2" thick closed cell foam. It's the cheap blue foam sold as camping mats for under your sleeping bag. A roll of it will easily cover the interior side of your firewall, and it helps to insulate the tranny hump with it too. I sprayed mine over with black paint so...

I need advice on carb, what 2 do ?

The motorcraft 2bbl is a copy of a Weber. If you think it ran well before it is likely a peice of grit thats worked its way up and blocked the idle circuit. That or a vacuum leak. It could even be water sitting in the bottom of th3e float boal. I wouldn't start swapping carbs and spending...

    another sm420 question

I'm looking at two sm420's in a local wrecking yard. One is from a 1 ton, the other from a 2 or 2.5 ton. Anyway, I looked at Pinhead's writeup and a couple others, but I see the two sm420's I'm looking at have a different casting by the reverse gear bulge. These ones have two horizontal ribs...

    Axle Breathers

I drilled the center of the breathers out a bit and brazed in 1/4" brake line stubs with the tips flared to keep the hose from slipping off. I didn't feel the neck on the orig breather is quite long enough. Be sure to use an oil compatible hose. Fuel hose will work fine. You can use T peices...

    master cylinder bore question

Hey guys, I ran into the same issue when I bought my truck. I decided that I wanted a dual circuit MC, drums on all fours, and no power brakes. I ended up with a mid 70's Ford PU cylinder. It has a typical of domestic 2 bolt flange, a 1" bore, and the fittings on the left side. I used a...

    very simple questions

For Q1, Gaskets everywhere as mentioned. You might want to use a thicker heat insulator type gasket if you find the carb getting too hot. Otherwise can get fuel boiling in the float boal :P. Q2: If you don't hear the exhaust leak yet, you might just put off pulling the manifolds for now...

    More clutchin stuff

I had a bunch of trouble with mine. I put FJ60 hydraulics in to replace the original stuff ( '66 FJ40 3spd, seized slave). I don't know if this will help but.....the clutch side push rod was too short and the piston came out far enough that the seal caught on the edge of the cylinder and...

    Lift and tire advice

Q1: You might have to replace your shackles if your not happy with their shape after pulling them. My side plates were pretty thin from corrosion around the bushings. Go with the skyjackers. People seem happy with them and you could go to an extended shackle if the 33's rub. Don't worry...

    Shock mounts

Lots of droop sounds great, but I don't think I could fit shocks that long on it unless I go SOA. I'll save that project for later perhaps. For now, I just want to get the most out of my lowrider 8) :D. This is my first LC so I'm building it up slowly. Ton's of great info on this website tho...

    head gasket

Hey cruiser_guy, I recently bought an '80 BJ40. Unknown mileage but it seems to run great. What I'm wondering is if you aren't at all concerned about the engines bottom end. I know these are good engines, but a turbo on a 330000km engine? If it doesn't put too much burden on a higher mileage...
