CLUTCH

Anyone up for helping someone who never has replaced a clutch on a FJ60 do it? I knew it was going, but was in denial (eh 220,000 is decent I guess for the OEM clutch). Anyways, never dropped a tranny on one of these, and it is going to be my cullowee vehicle. I would have many 's and some cookout food for anyone interested. As I am in the asheville/hendersonville metroplex I figured it could go either way. Any who, just chime in if you wish to throw a hand in.....

Jay

Yes. It's not a good one but has worked on the ones I have done.

I think i'd be ok if I just had the transmission saddle that goes on top of most trolly jacks, I have a 3 ton HD trolly jack with the removable saddle, but if not I could definately use the jack, anything to make this easier....

Not that I can help, but in any case, when you get the jack under the transmission, make sure you strap that transmission to the jack. That is a lot of weight when you include the T-case and moves around easily on a small platform. I am so happy that I had access to a real transmission jack, and would suggest looking into renting one if you can't borrow one.

Good luck with the clutch change, wish I could help.

Yep mine is not a good one. A strap is a must. I just use a couple or ratchet straps. The key is to counterweight the side that doesn't have the t-case. It is very handy though. SO far I've used it 3 times. Chuck once and JP twice. Last time it saw duty it pulled JP auto tranny and case out of his 62. That is a seriously heavy chunk. It did just fine as long as you took your time. Having another jack undr the t-case also helped steady it. An air ratchet on the jack makes all the difference.

Might want to think about getting some members chipping in and buying one.

I can't agree more. Jay we need a tranny jack. I have only done 2 clutches in the past and both cars had much lighter trannys and a tranny jack helped so much then that with the weight of this tranny/tcase i suggest we find one. I think we can rent one from someplace here. Also if you want this to be a quick in and out job seeif you can source another flywheel to have it resurfaced and waiting and 2 rear main seals if yours is leaking.

I've got one you can use but I don't know how I can get it to you. By the time you drive down here and back you could have rented one.

Luckily my rear mains are ok, but it comes with the clutch kit, so they will be replaced. I don't know where to rent them, but I might be able to pick up the saddle, which would essentially turn my jack into a tranny jack at northnern tool for about $40 some oddness. I agree it would be nice to source a flywheel, but with carquest's machine shop less than 10 from the house it shouldn't take them that long to re surface it if we had a couple folks up here helping and one ran it to the shop, plus it would offer refreshment time as a break......

May want to call them to see what a turn around time would be, and if they can do it on a saturday. if it is not to bad i have gone over them with a sanding wheel to give a nice surface.

Marshall. I may come down that way to pick up some stuff for myself, or Blair will be there the begining of Oct for work. He could pick it up and bring it north possibly.

When I had my 60, I pulled the seats and lowered the tranny down from the inside of the cab. FYI my pilot bearing was a PITA until I used the old trick of packing grease in and using a pin to "press" it out.

Did the droping from above trick on a Fj-55 clutch job years ago had a engine hydro arm lift and hooked a chain type winch to the trans/transfer combo slid it back and winched it down on a heavy duty creaper on the floor. Worked like a charm, but I have used the dedicated trans jack from below and think it's the best overall route. But sometimes necessity is the mother of invention just don't drop the thing on anybody or yourself.

P.S. if you do drop it from above it all goes better if you disconect and remove the shifter lever. Doc

Ahhh now you need it. You know I sent you a link back when you bought the 60 that had all the manuals. They finally took it down. I downloaded a copy but have no way to get it to you.
