*********Club SHAMONwich June 20th-22th*************
We have moved this event back due to parts availbility
Jun 20th-22nd
Alan Hardins house. Cleveland, SC.
One of the single most popular things that needs to be done on a cruiser is to rebuild the front and rear axles.
Friday starting after 5, all day Sat and Sunday. We either camp or stay at a hotel nearby. Those details can be worked out. But we will provide a shuttle to and from the HAMON. I'd also like to use this time to hold some classes.
First and foremost will be an axle rebuild class to get everyone familiar with what we will be tackling.
2nd will be a Differential rebuild class. This will include how to install an ARB locker as well as installing chromoly birfields into an early housing. I will work with Richmond Gear or Aussie locker and see if they will donate a locker to show how a ratchet locker is installed. Maybe we could get someone to step up to the plate and show us how to take out and install a third member in an FJC. Since they have had some issues.
3rd and if there is time will be a transfer case rebuild class. Including single piece 3 and 4 speed t-cases as well as the split case. I have a split case that can be rebuilt and probably the majority of the single case found on 40's.
What you need to think about now. What you want to do. You will need to have all the parts needed to do a rebuild. I will have 2 complete sets of axles there for any 40 or 60 series that may run into an issue. You will also need the basic tools. A metric socket set and box wrenches are a must. I will have everything else to do the jobs properly. Just remember you will be doing the work with someone helping you do it right. The whole point of this exercise is to give you the confidence of being able to do this on your own.
Also anyone who wants to tackle anything else can join in on the fun I as well as others will be willing to give out any help we can.
All in all it ought to be a lot of fun and a great learning experience for all.
If your interested in participating or just coming to give a hand and learn something post below. If you have any ideas throw them out.

GREAT IDEA, Marshall!! Just another reason UC is such a great club.
Hopefully I can make it to learn, and hopefully bring a cruiser. One other idea for this could be do a safety checkup. Check status of members winch cables, tree straps, etc, and provide them with a list of things needed before going out on the trails. Just a thought.

Doesn't someone have a big warehouse with carpets we could place underneath to catch the grease and oil?
kidding aside, sounds like a cool idea!

Great idea, just makes me wish I had waited on doing both my axles last winter.
I would definately be interested in the diff rebuild stuff. Always wanted to learn how to do that.

Could someone take the time to teach me to weld? I'm going to become a pro by the time Jerry-Jeff is looking good but I need a starting point.

The bank account would really appreciate it if I could stop writing checks to the mechanic. Sounds like a great opportunity to learn some things. If there is any way I can make I will be there. Great idea!!!

Good to hear from you again Potty. I'd love to come visit sometime! All it takes is time, right? Hope to see you soon bro.
This is going to be so much fun. With a weekend like this I might just learn a thing or two.

Alan offered up his place for the weekend. Which is a lot nicer. We will rent a port-a-jon. I will work on sleeping arangements but I'm sure camping is good. This will be a work in progress.

I would love to attend (at least for part of the weekend). I am another who has always wanted to learn how to do an axle rebuild. Funny....I was mentioning to the SO last night about *needing* 4.88's and ARB's so we could run 35's

I agree, this would work out well. The only dates that doesn't work is 11-13. Otherwise the "Skunkwerks North" is an excellent choice.

Great idea, the axles are on my "short" list and I would love to learn to do it in the presence of some skilled people.

Just giving this a bump. If I can convice Alan to let us dirty up his woods. What would you all think about chipping in a renting a steam cleaner and clean our vehicles up before we wrench on them? I'll check with Alan and see what I can work out on a price.

Talk with Scott yesterday. He has access to a big steam cleaner. So we are good to go and best of all it's free.
Talked with Kurt with Cruiseroutfitters. He is working up a deal for us on a group buy.

Advice solicitation
Should I think about changing out my rear diff, i.e. the explodable parts?
Of do you guys think if it was going to happen it probably already would have?
Or maybe just come along to watch and learn, be ready when (if) it happens?
Sure wouldn't hurt to give my underbody a good wash. Haven't had near enough deep water crossings lately.

What is the availability of our FJC explodable parts? Can we get on ly the ring gear piece??? If so I would be up for doing that at some point if the price was right...

from talking with Rick Arflin, Toyota doesn't sell just the R&P, it's the whole 3rd, which retails for around $1200. You can figure the discount price from that. Not too many folks are producing stock gearing for these 3rd's. I reckon you could find someone with stock R&P's, but my search last summer didn't turn up any. You can get bigger gears, 4.11 or 4.56's, but then no one has a setup for the front because the housing is too small for 4.11's or 4.56's, so that's kind of pointless unless you want to throw a solid axle on the front.
The trick I hear on swapping 3rds in an FJC is to remove all the e-brake clips along the frame rails. Then once your hubs are unbolted you should be able to slide the axle shafts out just enough on each side to pull the 3rd.
Otherwise you will have to undo the jigsaw puzzle that is the e-brake on the rear wheels. When we did the trail repairs, we just tossed all the ebrake parts in a box and then delivered the truck to the dealer for them to sort that aspect out.
*phone conversation*
"Um, Mr. Carswell, where are all your e-brake parts? And we couldn't find your drive shaft?"
"See the empty jack stands box? They are in there and the drive shaft is in the back seat, of course."

This should be a lot of fun and a great chance for me to learn something.
I ordered a new carb for Gundy today should be here by Monday.
I've had the same old 38DGAS Weber on there for over 20 years.
It's got some float problems. In other words it's toast in my book.
I don't think I can wait till this event to slap it on however .
Now I still haven't taken the top off to install that brand spanking new
headliner. Maybe with some extra arms around I might try to get the top
popped at this event. Shoot I may even let ya'll get a whiff or two of
the most excellent glue fumes.

I guess what I'm hearing is ride it 'til it blows then hope for warranty claim.
Thanks for the hint on the repair though. Well noted

Marshall, I'm interested in this as my front is weeping and due for at least seals but if apart I was going to do the whole shooting match. Been holding off since it was a bigger job than I felt comfortable tackling alone. So if you are looking a volunteer 60.....I could be it. Just let me know the details. Heard a parts washer is a huge help, where could I buy or rent one for the event? Note, I am cheap and proud of it.

We planning to make this trip...need to pick up some welding skilz from the wise ones. Cat's truck is entering the wheeling field and we need to do some body work. We've even got our own 110v welder, just need to learn how to use it and get it back from Heather.
Marshall, what's the deal with the steam cleaner? Will it be at Alan's or are you cleaning rigs "offsite" before arriving at Alan's?
