2nd Annual Lowcountry Boil 2009

The dates we have planned for this event are 25-27 September 2009 at Carolina Beach.

Here is what is known and unknown at this time-

1. Drive up from Myrtle is about 1.5 hours by going across on ferry at Southport rather than driving up to Wilmington and then across and back down to Carolina Beach. Ferry ride adds another 35 minutes to this. About 4 hours from Charleston .

2. Ferry ride at Southport is about 35 minutes...puts you in at south end of island and then you drive to north end until you reach Freeman Park. You can camp, drive, cook, etc there on beach. All beverages are permitted as long as no glass containers or cups are used. Fires are permitted with use of your own fire pit or you can buy one up there.

3. School will be back in session so should not be as crowded but it is First Come-First Served for camping so I propose we plan on arriving before noon to be sure unless we can get a couple people to go up early Friday morning and stake out a large area for majority of group.

4. There are no proper showers there...but is a place to rinse off but they ask that no soap be used...so likely to rinse sand off. Biodegradable soap and a dip in ocean may be the other option unless you rent a motel room long enough to shower and freshen up....but afterall it is CAMPING so if you get to rank smelling we can toss you in tidal pool.

5. I have some pictures and other information collected by a prospective member that wheeled with us at Uwharrie. Her husband and she went there last weekend and gathered information and took pictures for us. Mylene and Thomas in blue FJ Cruiser....the FJ is hers and he has a Tacoma and rock crawling 4runner.

6. Looking at something simple for Friday night group.....and everyone is on their own for lunch and breakfast unless people gather in unorganized feeding frenzies on their own. Saturday night will be Lowcountry Boil and the main event. David Milligan will bring his cooking implements; I am bringing some pots and cookers as well. If you want to pitch in and help let Dave Milligan know.

7. Fishing, swimming, sand castles....and we are looking to see if there is a historic or special interest site nearby for a little road trip for those that want an excuse to get out of sun and wind and sneak a hamburger from McDonalds.

In addition to all of this we are looking for some volunteers to help with following:

- tshirt design and everything from conception to delivery
- pricing for event to include Saturday night meal, tshirt, etc; get with Upstate Cruiser guys to get a PayPal payment process setup if possible to pre-pay for event and tshirts. Will need accurate record of paid attendees and have means to collect fees on site if people wait until then to sign up.
- someone to set up events for kids and adults during day; maybe a dead man anchor winch demonstration if beach is not crowded. Volleyball, frisbee, stickball, etc.
- someone to follow up on initial contact I made with vendors for raffle items or donations
- at least two photographers to capture events of weekend
- someone to check on license requirements if anyone wants to surf cast (fish), drag a seign net, etc.
-

We will discuss again at July Meeting to finalize and ensure nothing is missed. Thanks a lot for a great first year of the Lowcountry Land Cruisers and lets make this event a fitting closeout to our first year as we look forward to the next.

There is an aquarium down on the south end called Fort Fisher that I was planning on taking my little one to see. Looks like maybe some nice 4x4 beach exploring and some neat activities for the kids down there.

There is a state park nearby if anyone doesn't care for the sand and needs some shower fascilities, however you would have to drive a little ways, about 3 miles, to get to the beach camp. Probably kinda like how it was on Hunting Island. Some camped in the park area and drove a few miles for the boil.

Marshall even had a pimp pad condo while the rest of us roughed it.

Well it was more a comment on a full day there & a full day back and our days off of work are limited. We didn't get back from URE until 9pm Sunday night, and this is further. I wish we could take Thursday and Monday off just for driving days. I really want to go to the beach. We'll see.

I will bring my cooking stuff like last year if we go. If not, stop by my place on the way and I will gladly donate for the weekend.

So far we have no plans, but the 25th was Cassady´s birthday, ane will be the first we have gone through since she died so we may need to see how we feel about it that day.

DBENKE,

did you give out any vendor numbers to the club while I was gone to do follow up contacts for raffle items? If not....I will start those this week and next to try and get some more stuff....

we have a guy working tshirts....

dave m and I will cook fri and sat night.....but will need to get food prices from the guy at BBQBoys from meeting....said he worked for food wholesaler

need to call vendors for follow up to see if we can get anything from them....but dont want to call them multiple times so if nobody else has started I will call while off work this week...and on monday as well.

need someone to figure out some side trips...aquarium....other sites of interest.

I am bring bocce balls...if someone can bring volleyball, frisbee, football... I might also rent a sea kayak for the trip...anyone else?

I plan on relaxing this trip.....am worn out from Colorado LOL

I can bring a small volley/badminton net.

I can also look into buying shrimp from my friends shrimp boat again if you want.

I can also look into the aquarium.

LMK,
Jeremy

okay jeremy....volley ball net and ball.......check prices on shrimp for Saturday night.....we are doing a boil so wont need as much as if doing fried or all you can eat shrimp. Check the price per pound and then when we have better idea of attendees we can purchase....

For aquarium....I think we need hours and prices for adults and children...and whether a large group needs an appointment.

Thanks.

That's the plan, I think the other guy is going to have trailer his 40 up there since it doesn't have power steering.

I haven't contacted anyone yet, I've been working my A** off. I'll look into the side trips and get all the info on them. I didn't get any response last year on fishing charters. I think once everyone heard the price, they all backed out.
I'll post this weekend what I find interesting/exciting to do.

then I will take back the vendor contacts and already working something with Sparks..... A couple of our members have boats...what are the saltwater license fees for North Carolina waters....that might be better to split fuel and go out self guided.

I was told there are public showers in the paved parking lot beach side just before you go out on the sand, but I haven't used them.
I had the Olde North State ride at URE down for that weekend. I'll have to talk to my rider about which way to go, I expect she'll opt for beach.
My people will get in touch with your people.
If it's up to me it'll depend on whether I muster the energy to change to swampers (ergo URE) or stay on my road tires (thus CB). It will also probably depend on whether I get the to the beach enough before 27 Sept.

Don't know if you guys had posted this or not, but being an ex CB native, north-end driving of CB and South end of KB Fort Fisher Rec Area ORV fees are $10 a day. $40 for the season.

Saltwater Fishing License: http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg01_Licen...tAppl_0107.pdf

Places to buy license: http://www.ncwildlife.org/fs_index_01_license.htm

Let me know if I can do anything for you guys as I'll be in Wilmington/WB/CB/KB the next two weekends... And yes, I booked the ONSC Uwharrie run for the same weekend. I'm not sure who booked the weekend first, but was hoping on bringing some boards with me to hang out with you guys. Oh well...
