That's very cool, cause I'm in Iraq at the moment. I sent him a email asking a few questions and if I liked what I heard I was going to have my wife get it. She lives in Georgetown. Thanks

So you are not in Yuma still? Will you be coming back to South Carolina after your return? If so, would love to have you join us in a couple events. We have a another DevilDog or two in the club already....so we are equal opportunity bunch.

Well Yuma is a long story, I had orders to go back there but since me and my wife are both from Andrews, SC I decide to go to Beaufort. I would have rather went to Yuma but my wife didn't want to live that far away from our families again. I haven't been wheeling in over a year because my 4Runner's engine took a crap last Nov and I've had so much going on I haven't had the time to fix it. I'm going to swap a chevy 4.3 in it which I already have. I'll be driving the FJ62 from Beaufort to Georgetown for a few month after I get back, untill my wife move to Beaufort in Jun. She'll also be driving it time to time as well.
Thanks the help and support.

As an almost 62 owner, I'd be willing to go also. Let me know when you know.

Okay....made contact with owner of LC today....I am going to give him a call Friday afternoon to drive over and check out the rig. He said it was a Utah raised FJ that the guy drove it from there to Charleston and sold it to current owner (they are buddies). He has had other Land Cruisers and is getting another...possibly a 62 with diesel engine that is in local area
If anyone wants to tag along and check out the rig and meet the guy as a prospective future member send me a PM with your phone number (already have David Benke's)... I am expecting to head that way around 3pm.... He is in West Ashley behind Geralds so we can meet right there in parking area where road runs between Geralds and the bank where everyone parks around 3:30pm.
USMCRacing-- anything specific you want checked specifically. It has a 2 inch lift...original styled brakes...so it stops like crap and handles terrible LOL....but other than that anything you want checked let me know.

Thanks, it's really cool of you guys to take the time to look at something for someone you don't know. The main thing I'm worried about is reliability and rust. I know that the Land Cruiser I6 is very long lasting engine. I owned a 91 Fj80 while I was stationed in Yuma, Az and had over 225k but still ran like a new one. Thanks again

I went by and checked out the FJ62.....
Here is the run down...
1.245k on odometer
2.minor leak it appears on valve cover, likely original gaskets
3.tranny seemed tight as did differential
4.Warn winch worked but remote was lost this past year...cable is in good shape.
5.Some rust as expected on the FJ6X series...bottom of quarter panels but was bondoed and rhino lined as seen in pics....on fuel filler door...around back window and some on rear quarter panels.
6.Looks solid on frame, suspension and axles.
7.Slight tapping on engine...very light.
8.Vacuum lines appeared to be not very old, newer battery, might have slight leak in header gasket to pipe.
9.Tires are good shape....5 tires.
10.Radio face plate missing but has another to put in for radio if you dont want to do it yourself.
11. Electric windows work but are slow; door locks work
12. Drivers side rear door handle sticks...have to push handle in to reset door so it will catch.
13.Original interior...good steam shampoo would do wonders for it
14.OME lift kit...had him drive truck around yard...no squealing from bearings in wheels...no clunking or anything.
15.Tube bumper on back in good shape..some dents in it but not bad. Front is same..worn but good shape.
16.Started right up and seemed to run strong...could use tune-up..maybe new points and plugs would help.
17.Front windshield has 3 full length cracks
Good trail or hunting rig....with a little work and some personal touch so you know it better could be your daily driver but not sure would let my wife drive it daily. Good vehicle for running trails, driving to job for you, hunting and camping it appears.....but would want to get my hands dirty on her and do some personal discovery to make sure she was sound first.

then on way home I saw this FJ40.....in neighborhood across from StAndrewsPlaza and Coburg Dairy Cow...cant remember road. It is a front road parallel to Hwy17 with trees lining highway so you barely see through to houses facing frontage road and such. It was parked out front about middle of the street distance wise.
Anybody know them....

Thanks for going and checking it out. It sounds like it'd be a great trail rig. If I didn't have so much tied up in my 4Runner I'd buy it for that purpose. Do a SOA, regear, lock it, and slap some 37"s on it. I can't see the pics of it while I'm at work cause the military blocks most picture hosting sites. When I get off I'll check out them out when I get off.
How bad was the rust, was it surface or poping up the paint?
Of everything you looked at was there anything that would attention right away? It doesn't sound like it to me but I only owned one FJ80 and it ran perfect. I'm not going to be back home untill this spring mar/apr time frame. I sold my daily drivers right before I left, I had a 95 F350 and 98 VW Jetta TDI. My wife drives a 05 Nissan Frontier CrewCab.
Did he say if there has ever been any major work done to any of the drivetrain? Like trany, head gasket, or axle work?
How many miles can be put on the 62's auto? I know the 3FE engine will run for over 400k easy but not too sure on the trany. The 91 FJ80 I owned had 225k on it when I bought it and the trany was replaced at 175k. That's a bill I'm glad I didn't have to pay.
My wife isn't going to daily drive it but she would drive it time to time. She isn't a girlie girl, she's from South Carolina and raised on a farm. LOL Don't tell her I called her, farm raised.
If I don't get the 62 I'm going to be looking for a perrty FJ40 or atleast one that's not in too bad of shape.
Thanks again, now I need to run your report over with my wife and see what she thinks.

the rust was causing the paint to bubble up..would likely need to be cut out with new metal inserted to fix it right...but there were no holes in body I could see. This is second paint job but not sure how old it is.
he said it was a Utah rig....a guy he knows drove to Charleston and he bought it from him. From what he knows everything in tranny and engine is original...and he has not done any work to it at all either. He put a new left door control panel for windows and locks in this year...but that is about all he mentioned other than some other things like rhino lining the rocker panels, rear cargo area, etc.
Then again you might start seeing some of the other FJ60 and 62 rigs in the area that are setup with 4-6 inch lifts, 35 tires, roof racks, 40gallon tanks, front and rear lockers, regeared to 4.56 or 4.88, etc......and want to sell the 4Runner.
From what I could see the body is the thing that would need the most work....without digging into motor and such. Asked him if he has done any drivetrain repairs or knows of any done by previous owner and he said no....it has been solid and will bark the tires in driveway if he takes off too fast while the fast idle is going in morning...LOL
From what I know the auto tranny is tough as well in these trucks....DOC might be able to answer that better as my and my dads FJ60 is the 4speed.
I did not hear or see anything major.... Only thing I forgot to mention is he said the AC is intermittent...one day it will freeze you and another it wont.
I would drive it to work if I knew I was also going to do work to it on weekends to fix it up better....
For a trail rig I that is also a daily driver I would say yes.... but if you are keeping your 4Runner for trail rig and this was just going to hold you over as daily driver and you dont want to put work or time into modifying it and fixing it...then maybe not.

Well my wife was willing to go and get it with my brother but then she start talking about me selling my 4Runner and getting a................. HEEP. I was like HOLD ON, I'll never own another one of those. Then she starts going on about our daughter really wanting a Jeep and how she wouldn't stop talking about how she couldn't believe that I owned a Jeep before she was born. It's actual really funny, she just turned 5 last week and has been riding in Toyota's since my wife first found out she preg. When she was 6 months old I would take her to day care ever morning in my old 84 Toyota pickup with 5.29s and 33" Swampers, that truck would put her to sleep with the first few miles. When was around 2 I started taking her wheeling with me and when she saw a Jeep she wouldn't asking if the Jeep was stuck. Very funny and proud moment. Now comes the sad day that she wants a jeep. She had a dumb Jeep power wheel and even that worked like the real thing, broken all the time.
So what does all this mean? I'm going to try and find a clean FJ40. I think that she'll like them just as much as a Jeep.
Brock thank you so much for going and looking the 62 over for me. The auction is over now and the internet was down so I couldn't have bid on it any ways.

Well it didn't get over $2600 on his auction. I thought about offering him $3k for it but I think I'd rather get a nice 40 later on. Thanks again, Hope you guys are having a great weekend.

Well that's alot over my prive range. I'm sure I've seen the same one a few times. Was is red or a sandy brown? I've seen some really clean ones for under $8k and I don't think I'd want to go over $6k. I'm going to get another diesel tow rig. As much as I liked the past two Powerstrokes I've owned, I think I'm either going try a Cummins or Duramax this time. Trying to keep the price on the tow rig under $15k. I wish I was home now cause I've seen a few that I'd love to take a look at.
Now speaking of high dollar FJ40's, check out this $157,000.00 and no I didn't add a extra ZERO. I give you a hand built ICON FJ43, eBay Motors: Toyota : Land Cruiser (item 160304470265 end time Jan-01-09 19:28:36 PST)

Yeah...that is why the FJ40 has been there for MONTHS...
I know the FJ Cruiser you posted....he has about $200,000 into it......I hope he gets what he is asking but someone wanting to do CORR events or serious expedition might be only ones to buy it....or someone rich that just wants to have the only and baddest ass FJ out there.
LOL
