The plan is to run my truck the way it is thru the winter. Collect everything I need and swap it in in the summer.

I have an SM465 coming from RK in Charlotte (thanks Brock) and I plan to use a Toybox to adapt the tranny to a split case that I have coming (thanks Sherman FJ62). The Toybox will allow me to keep my offset rear axle, save me $500 on an adapter, and give me a couple of gear choices. I will have 120:1 and 60:1 not counting the other choices in 2nd and 3rd. Plus the Toybox has provisions for an under-mounted crossmember where as usually with a V8 swap you have to mount the cross member to the rear of transfer case. Which sucks IMHO.

I will also be running a stock GM TBI setup that I have started gathering parts for. I will be getting a complete harness and tuned ECM from AFI, unless I can find a deal on a used set between now and the time to fire her up.

I am planning on running the stock radiator (upgraded to a 4 row) with a custom SS sheet metal shroud. I have a lot of big HVAC guys that work for me so I should be able to make a template a get a favor out of one of them. Hopefully this will suffice so I don't have to buy a blinging AL radiator.

So come next spring I will have a nicely upgraded 2F available to either sell complete or part out to anyone interested. To anyone who has seen my build, there are a lot of sweet new parts on my 2F, and I hope to atleast get my money back out of it.

Jeremy

The GM Muncie SM465 Transmission - Novak Conversions

It'll have the bellhousing like in the picture with it too.

Chevy did make a bellhousing with mounting tabs. but I don't think I would hang a 465 from it.
It was in the mid to late 60's trucks (just FYI)
Love that Chevy ORANGE

This is a stock housing from an early 80's Suburban. Hey David, have you ever rebuilt an old Muncie. I heard it wasn't too bad.

No, not a muncie, but several others. I'm in the process of rebuilding a T-5 now for the '77 CJ.
Plans are to sell it and buy a 62 or an 80.
The easiest thing I found is just go by an exploded view to get the spacers in the right place.

I had to go with an aluminum radiator to col my SBC. I just got a generic one from Summit. At the time it was about $189. It really did improve cooling over the 4-core I originally installed. I also had to add a second fan (electric) on the forward side of the radiator.

Engine looks good. Keep us posted.

Did not hear from you with contact info or anything since I posted asking for contact info of your tranny....(for car not pre-operative mistress LOL) so I bypassed Charlotte on drive home today..... hope you can get it down soon for your swap out.

Had the back of the FJ empty with a piece of plastic and cardboard for it to sit on....oh well.. good luck.

Sorry, man I thought you told me you were going up the weekend of the boil? It isn't even in Charlotte yet. It is getting taken there from Roxboro this week. So aside from it not being in Charlotte, I hadn't paid for it yet either. I was going to give you the cash the first of next week to get it the first weekend in Oct. When I saw Sat. I thought you meant that sat. and didn't have his contact info yet. I didn't realize you were up there now and could get it coming back thru. Thanks for the help, I am sorry you got ready to load it up for nothing. If you can't get it next time, I will contact him and tell him I will have to pass on it.

No problem, I misunderstood you that you could get it the weekend of the boil. I'll let him know I can't get it. I just hope he hasn't already taken it to Charlotte or else I will be making a trip up there.

Well, I got the SM465 situation taken care of. RK is taking it to Wilmington mid-October. I will pick it up there then. This actually worked out better for him instead Charlotte.

I called Marlin Crawler today to see about ordering my Toybox, and they are on back order for 2-3 months. So it looks like the drivetrain work will be put off until after the first of the year. Once I get the Toybox, I will rebuild the tranny and rebuild the spilt case and bolt it all together.

For now, I will go ahead and finish off the motor. Dist., wires, plugs, headers, and all the acc. mounted.

Jeremy

Just about to make a little more progress on this slow evolution. Today I found a screaming deal on a complete running speed density TPI fuel injection setup. It was running in a YJ with a painless conversion harness and the computer is already programmed.

The harness alone sells for $400 and I got everything for way less than that. Picking it up in Columbia next wed. Once I get it, I will clean it up and start mounting everything on the engine. A lot of these fuel injection systems are piece milled together, so it is nice to find a complete setup that was working when uninstalled.

Here is a pic of the pile that I am picking up on wed. Once I get it I am dropping staright off at the bead blasters to get it cleaned up and back to original.

Picked up the FI stuff in Columbia the other day and right away I dropped off all the Al parts at the blasters. Here is how they turned out. I was hoping they would look good bare, but have already started spraying them with Aluminum color paint. I will start removing the 4 bar. intake tonight and put the new TPI stuff on.

Also the fuel pump he threw in was a nice Walbro high pressure inline pump. The exact one I was looking at purchasing. They sell for about $140 new so that was a nice bonus. He also threw in some rubber fuel line with nice -6 AN fittings. Those are like $5 ea. It's these little things that add up on a project, so it was nice to get a jump start on a few pieces.

All painted up and I just had to see how it looked on the motor. I removed the 4 barrel intake and test fit the TPI unit.
Got the headers coming in next week.

I ditched the mismatch stock v belt brackets because nothing seemed to work right. I got a set of March Performance serpentine brackets/pulleys. I ordered the powder coated version not the polished billet. I wanted the less upkeep of the PC ones. They turned out really nice. I just need to pu the belts tomorrow.

A lot of people suggest the GM serpentine kit for $550 as it comes with all new pump, PS pump, alt. and belts. I already had a new one of each, and also my alt. was a higher output so I got the March kit for $350. I think it looks a lot cooler and a little more retro as well.

I also got my block hugger headers installed as well as the TPI unit all bolted down. I eliminated the EGR with a nice billet block off plate and also got a billet plate for the top of the plenum.

Now I just have to get a few sensors. Knock, O2, temp., and oil switch. Then I can start looking at wiring everything.

I finally got my installation into the 40 figured out. I got a Marks 4wd V8 to Cruiser 4 speed adapter. I got the one that allows you to use the stock GM flywheel and clutch. I figured they were cheaper and more readily available.

The Marks kit is part #MFK560C168
The Clutch is a Zoom #MU5473-1B, or Brute Power #90148
The Flywheel is a Brute Power #50-6504, 163 tooth, SBC internally balanced
The pilot bearing is a Summit GM Roller Bearing #SUM-G1700
The motor mounts are AA #713124

Here she is all wrapped on the trailer ready to go home.

I guess I should explain the carb. I have decided to go ahead and install the motor with the carb setup first. There are obviously multiple reasons for this. But the reason that finally made up my mind was the fact that I am going to have Affordable Fuel Injection build me a custom harness and ECM/Chip flash.

I figured I didn't want to be guessing on this setup using an old flash from the PO, plus the Painless harness needs a knock sensor and VSS. I do not want to have to fool with these, plus they cost about $200 for the pair. I sold my harness and ECM/Chip for $175, plus the $200 I saved on the sensors, that gives me $375 towards their stuff. I think it will cost me about $550 to get everything made, so for $175 I have all new stuff with no guess work. Seemed like the logical choice to me.

Plus I can have this thing running this summer instead letting the FI leave my project in limbo. Thanks Marshall. I will probably do the TPI over the winter.

I won't put a gay "brush" guard on my rig. It will get a "roll" guard instead. Screw the bushes I'm worried about my radiator when I flip so I can still get home.
