yeah, i think it's a little past that.

jemel, was that sea island tree service? there are a bunch of tree guys around here. They are desperate to get ride of stuff, so don't pay too much.

Dunno. Thanks for the tips.

Now on to the seafood.

Called Gay Fish company. They only sell fish and shrimp.

They have 36/40 (# per pound) white for $4 per lb.
They also have 26/30 for $6.50 per lb.

If we bought 100 lbs they would sell to us for $5lb for the 26/30. I don't think 25 people can eat 100lbs of shrimp in a weekend. We have about 800-900 dollars to spend on seafood.

So no Blue crab or oysters. Lady said they won't have oysters until mid Oct. Said I could call around though. She did give me a nuber to call about Blue crabs though. Jerry 843-597-5510 I left him a message. Shall see. I'm looking for #1 jimmys. Which is about 5-7 per dozen or 70-80 per bushel. A bushel would probably feed around 12 people by them selves with other food we would need half as much.

Anybody have any other ideas for blues and oysters?

gay seafood is very close to the campsite, good quality and weird hours. There is another seafood dealer about a mile down the road (away from campsite) they have a large blue sign on the left side of the road with a shrimp on it. You have to turn off the main road. I do not remember the name, but they sell good stuff also.

#1 jimmys? Are you talking about selects?

Clusters are starting to come in now. They run about $30-$40 a bushel. Problem is, without other food a bushel usually only feeds about 2 people. Not sure about the others you speak of. Around here selects in a box of 100 cost about $32.

Might want to just get the largest shrimp you can a make a frogmore stew. Then get some fish and fry it up with fries and hushpuppies. My vote is for tuna. It's in season and pretty fresh right now.

26/30 is kind of small. But I don't know if the bigger shrimp are even available this early. We usually get the jumbo in late Oct.

not sure on tuna, but Gay seafood always has an assortment of random fish they caught that day.

I think 50-60 lbs. of shrimp is plenty. When I boil shrimp for dinner, we eat about a lb. per person with just corn on the cob with it. With fish and other foods, I doubt very many people will eat over a pound each night. Now drinking around the fire and coming back for more is a different story.

I have fresh caught tuna coming in from Hatteras next week, so anything is fine. Mahi, flounder, grouper or something like that.

Jimmys are male blue crabs. Or thats what I call them. You have #1 blues which are big males. #2 which are the smaller ones just over legal. Then #3's consisit of mature female pot luck.

As far as oysters I've only bought the clusters by the bushel. So I'm not sure on quality. I think Frogmore stew and grilled BBQ bacon Shrimp would be a good way to warm people up Friday night. Then we can go buy whatever everybody is in the mood for Sat. Heck we might even catch enough crab to have a good feast Sat and do a surf and turf.

That's fine, but don't forget about the people that don't eat shrimp. You need to have some fish on both nights IMHO.

Thank you volunteering to go with me to get the seafood.

Now all we need is to get Bob to come along. I'm betting he would be a kid in a candy store.

Of course. I have my 120 qt. cooler with me to conjure up all the purchased bounty.

Now that you explained the crab names, I do remember that from my childhood. Just haven't heard it in a while.

Marshall, do you have any surf rods? like 12' plus? If not I need to buy atleast one. I think surf fishing is going to be the way to go down there. After dinner, the tide will still be coming in and should be fairly nice.

I have two that are short old and crappy. With a little beer on them they will work like they are brand new. I'll pack them.

Also you got a cast net. I found mine has become a new nest for mice. If not I'll buy one down there. I need a good one anyway. Also do I need to bring my shrimp poles? I have them in a nice piece of 4 inch PVC. I'll make sure I bring my license.

Hey Beaufort got any idea where a good bait shop is? I nead to make some bait balls.

I'm not sure, I'm to lazy to go shrimping. This place might have the dry bait mix. it's a new "old school" hardware store. they have a bunch of fishing stuff in the store.

Grayco - Lady's Island

most of the bait shop / fishing stores are on the other side of town, (near wal-mart)

I broke down today. I saw that 2" hitch ball on the back of the cruiser and thought it wanted to be used. So I went and picked up the boat. One way or the other that boat is going to make it to the beach.

Damn Marshall, that sucks. I like your way of thinking though. You got enough to worry about. Forget the poles, bring your liscense, buy a net, and I will get the bait for shrimping. I will also have plenty of big mullet to cut for surf fishing.

I'm starting to taste and smell it ! !
If I could leave today I would.

Listen: The is starting to get nervous about gasoline for the return trip.
And from what I saw in the news today I'm starting to wonder too. The promised return to normalcy this week hasn't happened here, in fact there's less around than last week. I don't think I saw a single station with gas on the way home from work today. And I saw in the news that supplies down state are starting to flag as well because our vendors have been supplementing from the terminals at the coast.
I'm going to have to know I can fill up in Beaufort and get home before we head for there Friday night.
Does anybody have a reliable source in the industry that can give a straight, honest answer to this?
b

You've got my number. I'll be heading down Friday night after work. I haven't checked the ball size on my hitch but I'm sure if I have to tow for you we can swap if necessary. The other concern is ball height. The hitch I have was for the mini-truck and has a 4" or 6" drop but Bonnie's receiver might be too high for a good level tow.
If you really think you might need backup maybe we'd better compare notes tomorrow. I'm off work all day and will have to change out my Swampers so I'll get a height and check the ball at that time.

I read your post Marshall on my phone and interpreted it to mean the 80 broke down. My bad.

I have my poles, and my print out showing my shrimp permit. The tags should come in, but just in case bring yours. I do have a net, but wasn't planning on bringing it because I didn't want to have to throw it. I am taking my small 5' bait net and minnow trap though. I also have a big shrimp basket too. Like I said I have bait for the surf fishing and will p/u the shrimp mix. Do you have a pole I can use for the surf or do I need to buy one?

Jeremy

I was planning for Thursday. I did find a CG back on St Helena Is bout ten miles back though.

That sucks the State does not allow first come first serve anymore. Seems like they would be loosing money if everyone booked a two or three day weekend shutting others out of staying longer. But, then again, who says we have to run a State like a business?

If nothing comes through, I may board the dogs and come sleep on the ground.
