LC Shrimp & Crab boil Oct 3-5 planning thread

We are on. Reservations have been made.

Oct 3rd-5th

Hunting Island, SC

About This Park - Hunting Island State Park - South Carolina Parks

We have reserved two group camp sites with a capacity of 60 people.

There are also RV sites available as well as nice cabins for those who want heat/ ac (1,2,3 bedroom) I'd suggest you think about reserving them now if you want one.

Camping will be only around 2-3 dollars a person. But we will try to figure out a good price per person that would include seafood and other food for the weekend.

We will have some boils and fry's Friday and Sat night. The ultimate goal will be for us to catch a majority of what we eat. Chuck myself and maybe someone who is local will work on trying to find a charter we can take on Sat. Possibly Friday night. I don't know how shrimping will be in the area. But I'm always willing to try to load the boat up. Hauling my boat down might be a giant undertaking but I'll see if I can find someone to haul it for me. If not I'm sure we will find a place to buy a bunch of bushels of oysters and shrimp.

I usually do this every year around this time. Me and two othe buddies go down to the Charleston Bay at night at the beginning of shipping season. I have all the stuff. Poles, Nets, pots and such. If you have never been Shrimping it's a pretty cool experience.

You have to buy a baiting permit $25

They give you these stickers to put on the poles. I use 10 1" x 10' pvc.

Head out to Charleston Harbor at night. Get a good stretch of water around 5 to 8 ft deep. Space the poles out in a line about 20 ft apart. We make fish meal balls. That crap stinks. Toss a ball on one side of the pole about 4 ft out.

One person driving the boat. One person at the front throwing a cast net and one person in the back with a small plastic snow shovel.

By the time you have put the last fish meal ball out your ready to make a loop around to the first pole. The pole is only a guide to help you remember where the fish meal is. Throw cast net on top of the ball. Pull in shrimp. Usually get a dozen or two per cast. Dump in boat. In my boat everything flows to the back including the shrimp. Thats where the guy with the shovel come in handy. Then all you do is go down the line and repeat.

I can usually fill up a 48 qt cooler (limit) in about 2hrs. Sometimes longer. Have done it in less than 30 min. GPS helps in knowing where the hell I am. Also it can get crowded in the bay. And nothing beats a big ship coming in the harbor and making a big swell. Always fun.

Oh and you need lots of beer.

I could handle a couple of people on my dads boat to ride out and experience it if you'd like. He has a 21' ranger flats boat. It can take the harbor know matter how big the swells are. So if anyone wants to ride a long just let me know. I will be living in Charleston in a month, and will help in anyway I can.

I think everyone should atleast hang around for one night and have a little after party, not a big drinking and driving fan.

Jeremy

Are there any good state parks for camping nearby?

If so, this could be a family friendly event on the low end of cost. Might satisfy a need for salt water in, say, November? Tents, coolers, camp fires, shrimp, and beer. Also would be a good time to rally with the Lowcountry Mafia.

I agree on the overnight . . . can't stand the drinking and driving . . . seen too much bad stuff in my days.

OK Marshall (a/k/a Gump), find us a time and place.

I'll let JP work on the specifics of this plan. Just about the closest place is the James Island Park to camp. The also have small cottages. WHich after a night in the boat with shrimp all over you might not be a bad idea. It's only about a half mile from where the shrimp are.

November would probably be nice. It's at the tail end of bait season and the water should be clearer by then. Also it is a little cooler so picking and eating oysters should be nicer then. Even if everyone chipped in and bought the oysters it still would be cool. I hate eating oysters when it's over about 60 degrees outside. Cold nights, cold beer, and warm oysters are the shiz!

I don't think I could pull this off this year. I was thinking more along the lines of doing this next year. I just wanted to open this up for discussion and make sure we get it planned for 2008. Plus we have a full schedule in Oct and we have two things already planned for Nov. Monthly meeting and a Adopt a highway. I'm sure JP will get it all figured out.

Marshall, even if you don't have a group thing this year still let me know if a couple of you guys are coming. I would be glad to lend some extra help.

James Island County park is close but I am pretty sure they "don't allow alcoholic beverages" (not sure how strictly this policy is enforced though. I will ask around to see their policy (my neighbor is a ranger there) and to see if there are any other close camping spots. I could lend my yard to roasting some oysters though and could carry a few people on the 16' crappy boat. I live on Sullivan's so I am pretty close by.

Hey Jim, I'll trade you a 28qt. cooler of headed shrimp for a custom 40 rear bumper. Some of Carolinas finest crustaceans for some of Colorados finest bent steel?

Ill match the deal for sliders or a rear bumper for an 80 series.

Yeah, I think I read somewhere on here that you live close to Poe's Tavern? Man, I love that place!!!

Sullivan's island is awesome, you're lucky to call it home. I've been going down there since I was a kid.

Was most recently there for the 4th of July and got to check out your nutty parade that clogs the streets.

What about Hunting Island State Park?

This is in Beaufort SC near Hilton Head/Savannah.

Campground is on the beach and welcomes shrimpers and the like.

BTW - Enjoyed meeting everyone at the annual meeting.

Hey David!

It was great meeting you also at the annual meeting. Sounds like Hunting Island State Park may be a real possibility. Do you know if alcohol is allowed? (We aren't Cruiserheads with a drinking problem, its just that some of us are modest drinkers with a cruiser problem) I have four cruiser problems....
