SAFARI TURBO KIT With Intercooler For The 80 Series LC
Some of you have known that I've had the Safari intercooled turbo charger kit with Unichip, etc... in possession for a few years.
It is for the '95-'97 FZJ 80 and has never been installed.
The kit has been held for me by the kind folks at Man-A-Fre in Simi Valley, CA.
They are also holding the 3" cat-back exhaust system, as well as the free-flowing catalitic converter that were offered by them at the time I purchased the Safari kit for me. They are all new and never have been installed.
I had purchased the Safari kit under one condition that it would be installed at/by MAF and that still applies today. (Believe me, I've tried to talk them out of it many times before. ) So the catch is that the vehicle has to be taken to CA for installation.
At this time, I would like to sell these three components as a package. The US $ has gone down in value by about 20% since my purchase, so to break even I have to ask $7995 for the whole package, installed by MAF.
I would like to ask you to refrain yourselves from posting if you don't have anything nice to say about my asking price though. I am not asking for anything more than what I've paid, with the aforementioned exchage rate adjustment. (I paid via wire transfer from Japan).
Yes, I am well aware of the fact that what I'm asking for them is more than what most of these trucks are going for these days.
Just in case you didn't know, the Safari turbo kit has been discontinued for some time. It used to be so that Safari would manufacture them if they received orders of 25 or more units at a time. But I do not know if they would even do that now since I did not even see the info. on the FZJ kit when I last checked their site.
It also is CARB certified, meaning you can register it in California.
It might be hard for some of you to believe that this kit still exists, but you can verify it with MAF, either with Steve ("Steve-O" on Mud) or Al who is the president of the company.
With that said, that's A LOT OF $$$$ and I do not expect to sell it quickly (or at all ). If I don't end up selling them at my asking price I might go down a little in price. But I also do not have to sell them. So I won't be too disappointed if I don't sell them. You know what I mean, I'm sure!
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about any of the components.
Thanks for looking!

Wow-
I just saw an 80 this weekend with the turbo and intercooler. Very, very nice. It makes the truck a rocket.
Too rich for me but good luck with the sale. I would really love to have this.
At least, here's a bump for you.

Thanks, Andrew!
I've been trying to decide whether I wanted to keep the Safari kit for the FZJ or to get my current vehicle shipped across the big pond and I've finally made up my mind, I think.
But if it doesn't sell, then I probably would not be too heartbroken about it, especially if I can't get my current ride in until 2015.
We shall see what happens!
Thanks for the bump, btw.
I appreciate it very much!

I assume this kit is for the 4.5 gas engine, correct? Output power after complete kit installed is how much?

You know, Safari used to have a link/page/articles dedicated for the petrol FZJ (4.5L '95-'97) model, but when I looked for it last week I couldn't find it!
I'll look for it harder or maybe someone might have that info.
Thanks for the bump!

I've been looking since my last post and so far only found one credible source. lcool.org that states the actual numbers that I feel comfortable/accurate with, which I believe were taken from the Safari site when it was up.
I'll continue looking.
Here's what it said...
1FZ-FE
Now this is an impressive kit! With turbocharger and intercooler, a reliable 240KW of power and 540NM of torque makes the 80 feel 1,000kg lighter with around 7 sec 0-100kph acceleration (6.7 sec claimed) and nearly 2 seconds faster than the newly introduced 100 Series V8. The figures however don't do justice to just how driveable the car is. After spending some time in an automatic version on road and off highway at our club property, it's a kit that works very well indeed. You can trickle over technical stuff and accelerate smoothly without any nasty hit as the turbo comes in. It's also one our US members who have to endure anemic performance at high altitudes would appreciate.
The kit is quite comprehensive and as a consequence fairly expensive, however the quality of components and workmanship of this Safari kit is very impressive indeed.
An additional injection management unit is used to meter the amount of fuel injected via a dedicated injector in the inlet tract. The factory ECU and injectors are left untouched. A problem common with turbocharged gasoline engines is pinging or detonation. Whilst this kit does a good job of keeping detonation to a minimum it can occur when using regular unleaded. As a safeguard, the factory knock sensors are retained to retard the ignition timing if 6 successive detonations are monitored.
There aren't a great number of these on the road in Australia and only one in our group. There is however a great deal of interest and we're waiting for more of us to take the plunge.
It's an amazing and a complete package!
HTH's!

BTW, I didn't know this, but accoring to an online conversion formula, 240KW translates to about 322hp.
And 540NM translates to 398 lb-ft.
Please let me kwow if my math is not correct!

OK, just found a copy of an article published by Australia's Overlander 4WD Magazine (Not sure if it's the accurate name. )
I think this was one of the two articles that was featured on Safari's site before.
[EDIT]
OK, I just read the article CLOSELY and found that the 4.5L engine was in the 100 Series LC, instead of the 80 Series.
But it's still the same engine found in the '95-'97 80 and the feedback should be fairly similar.
[/EDIT]
I was going to copy and paste, but I couldn't. So I hope you bother to click on the above link and bother to read it.
I think if you've made it down this far and have read both the above post and the article provided on this post you might have a hard time resisting to the temptation.
As always, thanks for looking!

If "I" win, I'll do a give-away here and let you have it for free.

when you say "be installed at/by MAF and that still applies today.":
what kind of time frame did they quote you?
And will the installation take place in the facility in Simi or a place of their choosing?
I wouldn't want to buy this and find out my rig was sent to Arizona, or needed to be kept for weeks at a time.
I'm very tempted, seeing that my old place of employment was just around the corner from them, but I'd want my truck back in a hurry. not a "We'll get to it when we can" kind of deal.

Pablo,
Thanks for your interest!
As far as I know the installation will take place in Simi Valley (That's where it was going to be installed originally and I have not been told otherwise.)
And I have to apologize if I didn't make it clear from the get-go, but the kit was designed to work with/for '95-'97 FZJ's. So, unless you have another 80 that falls into those years it would not work... at least w/o addressing some issues which MAF might or might not be willing to tackle (Most likely not w/o incurring additional cost and time).
If you're still interested I would be happy to contact them and find out about the installation time frame. But I think it would largely depend on how busy they are. They've installed the same kit several times before, so they should be proficient.
Again, I would be happy to ask them and I believe that would be better than having a bunch of different people contacting them about the same product.
Thanks again for your interest!

Mot, this might seem like a dumb question but I guess I wondering why Safari has turbo kit for the 95-97 FZJ80 but not the other earlier models like 93-94 big bus tranny 80s.
What do you think is the reason? The flapper valve?

Hey mot, you might do better selling it outside of the USA. Unfortunately, when the dollar lost value, they didn't give us average 'Merkins more of them to make up for it. D'oh!

I was hoping that I would be able to find a definitive answer for your question, but couldn't! I "imagine" with a little fab work you might be able to get it to work. But I'm sure that would end up even costing more since it would be more work for Man-A-Fre to do.

Yeah, no kidding!
It is really too bad that I'm restricted not to sell it outright to anyone on the globe and ship the darn thing!
What sucks even more (for me anyway! ) is that if I took the payment via PayPal, rather than cash or bank wire transfer, I would be short by a few $$$.
I know this is not for anybody as most of us would not be sane enough to fork out that kind of cash, especially when the economy is bad like it is now.
As I've stated above I would not be too torn if I don't end up selling it, but I am willing to entertain any reasonable offers if any of you were serious about acquiring this kit.
Thanks again for the bumps, fellas!
